The Beating Retreat (The Closing Ceremony Of The Republic Day Celebrations)!

.

I watched this ceremony of 'The Beating Retreat' in our Door Darshan channel just now! This year it was transmitted in HD and looked beautiful!

Before the advent of  Satellite channels, our whole family used to watch Independence day, Republic Day, the Beating Retreat celebrations etc. in DD, without fail. Hmmm...now, we see glimpses of them in TV news in the evenings.  The current generation would not be familiar with these celebrations.  I don't know how much even my children remember! Nobody has got patience to watch these ceremonies.

I loved the Air Force and Navy's bugles, pipes, the Army's drum beats etc. I got one and a half hour video.  You can FF if you are bored at some places and watch other parts.   The 44-45 mts.' beat  (from the start of the video) and the last segments are very good.  I loved nearly everything! The designs they made were beautiful, esp. 'Bharath' in Hindi. We should be proud of our Forces!  I was wondering how the parents of the soldiers would feel when they look at their children in these bands! Pranams to them!

Now, to my favourite patriotic song by Asha Bhonsle.

I have seen a few R.Day parades when I was very young, probably because we had only two DD channels. I remember waiting to see what kind of exhibit (on wheels) was made for our TN state! I could see it even today, but... don't feel like it :)

PRIYA ANANDAKUMAR: Thank you, Priya!

DESTINATION INFINITY: Yes, TV was new and DD was the only channel we had and we were addicted to it, then. We had to watch it but I remember all of us enjoying watching the trucks depicting the States' cultures. It was interesting. Yes, we are exposed to too many other prog. in our TV and these are not interesting for us anymore. Still, I admired our Forces...What will happen if they get bored? We have to admire them. The HD transmission was beautiful!

The music and the military show off is great and enjoyable. I also watched in youtube. But I question the tradition. It is the 16th Century British tradition to recall the patrolling units to their castle.

I am sorry to ask. Do we still cling on to the British tradition? Why can't we come with something our own? My thoughts wander here. Is it because we "got" or "received" independence from the British? I think we should have kicked the British out of our soil just the Americans did. Then we will have our own tradition.

SG: I agree with you, SG! The tunes in the band are all alien to me. I hear all types of music. I could understand only 'Sare jahaan se achcha' in pipes, I think. Otherwise all are unfamiliar tunes. The dresses are colourful. Only sikhs have Indian dress with their head gear, turban. Well, we are still following the British, here, in judiciary and many other areas. Only recently the addressing system of the British to the judge as 'my lord' was changed! Hmmm...it is going to be like this for many more years to come!

KRISHNA: Thank you, Krishna! Jai Hind!

It is indeed fascinating to watch this annual music extravaganza:)

This fascinating performance holds a lot of meaning and significance to those born before independence or just after say during the fifties. To people born during the eighties and after this event may be boring and meaningless.
I sat through and watched most of this on TV.I was born in 1948 :)

RAHUL BHATIA: Yes, Rahulji!

RAMAKRISHNAN RAMANATHAN: As I have written in this post, when we had just DD, the whole family used to watch this programme. Now, only I was watching it, nearly the whole programme. Husband stood up when the national anthem was recited. Even son does it, smiling at me...maybe for my sake, I think! That is all!

Children who are born, as you said, after the satellite channels flooded our country, never know about this. Even schools don't bother to recite 'vande matharam' or 'jana gana mana' nowadays, well, most of the schools don't. But it is going to be like this!

I would have been happier if the tunes were with Indian touch, at least some. I heard only 'saare jahaan se achcha'. Or were there anyother? I was coming to the kitchen in between though.

This time we watched Republic day parade and it brought back so many memories. As a kid, I never missed the parade.

You remind us all the traditions..there was a time we we would watch the parade with utmost attention..today no more..

I agree with you! I think the cars processions are interesting to watch than parades... but in patriotic view it feels quite pride. Usually we go to the marina beach a day early to Republic day to see the helicopters and missiles placed near the lighthouse and cars kept ready for the republic day parade next to the Vivekanada House.

ASHOK: Thank you, Ashok, for watching! Did Nithila watch?

BK CHOWLA: I would love to visit once!

AVADA KEDAVARA: I am happy to know that a youngster is there still, who loves to watch this parade! Great, AK!

RENU: Too much distractions, nowadays, Renu! Nothing remains precious or memorable!

JEEVAN: I didn't know that, that we could visit our State's parade/military exercises on Republic Day. Oh, maybe we didn't give importance! Let me try to visit next year. Thank you!

Lovely Post SandhyaMa! Brings back good memories of DD.

Yes, even we would be ready, breakfast all done, to watch the Republic Day Celebrations. And stand up at the National Anthem and all.

The air shows were waited for always!

Sandhya said...

ONKAR; Happy to know that you remember DD Days!

CRAFTY SHINES: Yes. The airshows were the best! Nowadays, nothing excites us like they did in those days! Everything looks simple!

Usha Pisharody said...

One of the best shows there are! One feels so proud, and tingly at the same time!

USHA PISHARODY: Yes, Usha!

Brought back the memories of childhood! :) I remember watching these ceremonies with my family on DD and it used to be so interesting! Those days when we had only one channel! :)

Thank you for sharing! And the patriotic song is great, can be enjoyed the same every time!! :)

SAI CHARAN: Now, no more family views of programmes in the TV. Most of the houses have minimum 2 TVs and unlimited channels! We seem to watch more of foreign channels...it is going to be like this, hereafter!
