Cricket khelna mereliye mandhir jaane ki tarah tha....Sachin, A Billion Dreams!

 .

Watched this movie, yesterday and still thinking about it and pestering my husband by talking about the scenes! He is a cricket addict and I just watch it when India is at the winning stage:) He can recount ball by ball for matches of 10 years back! I talk about how short Sachin is, how tall Ashwin is:) But this movie even made me recount some of the scenes of the old matches in the film.  Some very cute home video clippings are also there in the movie.  We can see the real Sachin, a son, a husband, a father apart from being a cricketer.

I had watched the most dramatised movie 'Azhar' which was based on Mohammad Azharuddin, also a famous Indian cricketer who became famous for 'other' reasons and felt sorry for him in the end. Then watched a well-made movie on our another captain, MS Dhoni, 'MS Dhoni, the untold story' and liked it too. I like him more as a person! But this movie, also on a cricketer, touched me most.  Don't know why. I think I liked his whole family...liked his wife most.  She, being a doctor (MD in paediatrics), devoted her whole time to the family.  She talks often in the movie.  Cricket always came first for Sachin, family came later, she said (I had written a post on her here).  He was very close to his father and his brother played an important role in his cricket career. His brother introduced him to the then famous Cricket Coach, Ramakant Achrekar who asked him to shift to a school, which had a good cricket team. He stayed in his aunt's place and went to school and cricket coaching classes. His was a middle class family.  This was the changing point in his life. Achrekar was a tough coach and he used to give him one rupee coin whenever he finished the training session without getting out.  Sachin has got 13 coins which is still important to him.

The small boy who acted as young Sachin is very cute and acted very well.  Sachin was talking often in the movie, though some scenes were re-created.  Many clippings of important matches were shown throughout the movie.

'Sachin' name was chosen for him by his dad who was an ardent fan of Sachin Dev Burman, the famous Hindi film music director.  Sachin also is a music buff, he always played music in his dressing room, some songs played in repeat mode.  Our whole Indian cricket team was and is fond of Hindi movie songs.

As you know Sachin started his cricketing career at the age of 15 and then no looking back...it was a tough life for him.  Thank god, he met Anjali (I liked the way Anjali explained how it happened, in the movie) and married her in 1995 at the age of 22.  Thanks to the understanding couple, they stood together in their  unusual, hectic life together. They have got a son and a daughter.  Anjali was a great support, Sachin said in many interviews.

Sachin was the first cricketer to score 100 centuries in international cricket.  He had played many matches even after having multiple wounds in his body.  I think the post will be tooooo long if I start mentioning about his cricket career here.  Important occasions were included in the movie.

He explains how he got the news of his father's death in the middle of a match in New Zealand (I think!), came home and went back because the family wanted him to continue playing the match.  His family is a very close knitted family.  Very supportive to each other.

He is very conscious about his statements about other cricketers and members of the board, but tells openly in the movie how hurt he was when the announcement came about removing him from the captaincy and when he was again offered the post without discussing with him.

They showed Sachin's great fan Sudhir Choudhary as soon as the movie began.  Sachin made him to hold the world cup India won as an affectionate gesture later. He was taken along with the cricketers to the matches wherever India played, by our Cricket board.  You can see him in this trailer clip.

His dream was to win the world cup and hold it in his hands and he did it!  Felt bad seeing him going back to the dressing room after his last match.  His dedication to the game/playing for his country, ended.

It was tough life for him from childhood until his retirement.  Let him and his family enjoy a happy, peaceful life.

AR Rahman's music is superb.  They are showing it on TV often now.  Watch and enjoy!

Waiting...A Beautifully Made Movie!

.

I seem to be writing movie reviews often nowadays! Well...I seem to watch good movies often nowadays! I am enjoying our retired, relaxed life now! Think of the positive things in life...take life as it comes! Nothing can be controlled! Whatever happens, happens for good....well, preaching ends here!

I had been planning to watch this movie for a long time now...I had read reviews about how well Naseeruddin Shaw and Kalki Koechlin had acted in this movie.

The story of the movie can be written in two lines but the way it is picturized is beautiful...

Shiv Natraj (Naseeruddin Shaw) is a very senior psychology professor, who is taking care of his comatose wife Pankaja (Suhasini Manirathnam) in a Cochin hi-fi hospital. He has sort of settled in his routine of finishing his work at home and coming to the hospital to sit beside his wife who had been in the hospital for the past 8 months.  He holds her hand and talks to her, reads to her every day.  He is friendly with the nurses (a nurse brings him food from home everyday) and doctors.

Then comes Tara Kapoor Deshpande (Kalki Koechlin) who was a recently married young advertising agent whose husband met with an accident at Cochin, now in the ICU with a severe brain injury.

Both of them are waiting in the hospital for their spouses' recovery. They meet often and come closer while consoling each other.  Both of them love their spouses (Naseer's had been a 40 years of happy marriage and Kalki loved her short term husband).

Their generation gap is shown beautifully...how their thinking is world apart, language, how they look at their lives etc.  Kalki uses the foul words in every sentence and Naseer is a very straight forward, simple man! They come closer inspite of all these diversities.  Naseer is not even familiar with 'Twitter'! Every frame in this movie is well thought of.

I liked the acting of the assistant of Kalki's husband (Rajiv Ravindranath...new to me) and the doctor (Rajat Kapoor).  Both the cases are entirely different and I liked the way the doctor handled both of them!  Rajat also is a good actor.

Naseeruddin Shaw is a veteran actor and I have watched many of his movies.  Kalki, I liked her in 'Margarita with a straw'.

Now, to the trailer of the movie:

This movie is being screened often in TV or you can download too.  If you want to watch a meaningful movie, this is for you!

PINK, I Will Never Forget This Movie!

.
Some movies affect you so much that even after a day you keep on thinking about it...frame by frame! 'Pink' is doing it for me! 'Piku' also did it but in a happy way! But this hurt me, enraged me first and made me happy in the end.  We are reading about girls being raped, thrown acid for saying 'NO' to their advance and some murdered for the same word 'NO'! Esp. in our capital, Delhi.

The story in this movie happens in Delhi, very aptly! Three well educated, well placed in good jobs girls are staying together in a flat, which is common nowadays.

Image result for Free images of Kulhari and Andrea in Pink movie
The three normal working girls, Meenal (Taapsee), Falak (Kirti) and Andrea (Andrea) in the film, 'Pink'!
The movie starts with three scared girls in a car returning to their flat after attending a party where Meenal happened to hit a guy with a glass bottle.  A set of four boys are going in another car...one boy, Rajveer Singh has a bandage in his left eye and they discuss about the girls who hit him.  I was wondering what was happening..thought if I missed something because they didn't show the party scene or the hitting of the boy! But the story starts there!

They come to their flat. Starts discussing about the incident animatedly.  Then the girl, Meenal gets a phone call threatening her about the consequences.  This can happen to any working girl staying away from her family.

We think that this is like any other story, where the boy is the nephew of a politician, so the girls will be threatened and later put to jail, raped and so on.  But 'NO'.  This is different.  Meenal was taken to jail for 'enquiry'.  But a good Samaritan, a retired lawyer, Deepak Sehgal (Amitabh Bachchan) enters the scene.  He is weak, forgetful with a sick wife.  He stays just opposite their flat and had watched the girl jogging in the park and then picked up by the police that day.  He is inquisitive and asks the girls to show the FIR...He decides to fight their case.

Later on, the court drama starts! Since the 'affected' boy had influence, his 'loud mouth' lawyer starts abusing the three girls with very intimate questions.  Yes, this looks like a normal story .... until now! Deepak Sehgal just watches the drama for most of the time.  After Falak breaks down, he gets up and starts 'talking'.

He starts questioning the girls.  It looked like he was  not their lawyer ... well, I should not reveal more.

Amitabh looks like a sleepy, very old person, older than his real age.  But when needed, his booming voice comes out!  Movies are going to run for him...this one included.  'Piku' will be remembered always for his comedy and this one for his 'stayed back' acting!

Taapsee as Meenal is new to me.  She is superb.  She must have been an unknown, not very famous actress until now! She will go places.  First the scared look, then hurt look, then resigned look....she is great.  And she is beautiful!

Kirthi Kulhari, also is new to me...she did very well when she exploded in the court.

Andrea, as a North-East girl looks timid, typical hurt girl for the mere reason that she was from Meghalaya.

I liked the way Mamta Malik acted as a typical corrupt woman police officer.  God, we can relate to her.

The best acting apart from the main characters was by Dhritiman Chatterjee as Judge!

The judgement was unexpected and Amitabh's verse in his booming voice and the scenes they show during credits which was also unexpected, adds to the uniqueness of the movie.  Hats off to the director, Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury!

We can see different types of men, the soft-natured landlord of the girls' flat (Vinod Nagpal of 'Hum Log' fame), the leering neighbour who was bent on proving that the girls were characterless, the boy's lawyer who questioned the girl in a very dirty manner without batting an eyelid (he must be having daughters, I hope!)...It is always the girls' fault, all men say.  Boys never get any advice from anywhere even from mothers.

This is a hit movie, I know! No one will say 'NO' for that!

Beautiful lyrics with English translation is here!

The trailor of the movie is here:

Enjoy the movie without fail!

Manjhi - The Mountain Man, A Nawazuddin Siddiqui Movie!

First I had second thoughts for watching this serious movie...a biographical movie.  I like Nawazuddin and wanted to give it a try...thank god, I watched it...this movie will be a milestone in Indian movies!

Normally, Indian movies which are based on true stories will have some scenes to 'entertain' viewers.  The director has not compromised anywhere or deviated from the real story.  Well, the heroine, Radhika Apte, who has acted as Manjhi's wife (whom we remember for her hot role in 'Ahalya')
might be a slight distraction, but she was completely transformed into Manjhi's wife and acted at par with Nawazuddin.  Many of their (very) passionate scenes come as 'dream scenes'! She seems to be a great actress.

Now, to the story of Manjhi, the Mountain man:

The story is based on the true story of Dashrath Manjhi, a labourer from a small village, near Gaya, Bihar.  The tiny village is cut off from the rest of the village by rocky mountains.  As it was common in those days (or are they still the same?), the local Mukhia (village chief) had made the local people as bonded labourers and extracted work from them for pittance.  Village women were raped and abused by his men. Manjhi's father was beaten for not repaying the loan and then was asked to give his son, Manjhi as bonded labourer.  Manjhi refused and ran away from home.  He comes back home from Dhanbad (in a colourful pant and shirt!) thinking that the attitude of the village chief might have changed after the Govt. declared that 'untouchability' was a crime.  But no, the chief embraces him at first but after knowing whose son he was, throws him away.  Manjhi was shocked.  He meets his childhood wedded wife Phagunia and elopes with her since her father refused to send her with him since he had no proper job.  Many scenes show how much they love each other and later they had two children.  Then one day when she was bringing lunch to him, falls down from the mountain and dies before reaching the hospital in the neighbouring town which was across the rocky mountains.

Then the story changes.  Manjhi is bent on carving a road for the village to connect to the neighbouring town so that others will not suffer like his wife did.  He starts cutting the rocks with just a hammer and chisel. He was called a madman and abused by his friends and villagers.  But he never stopped cutting rocks for 22 years.  A glimpse of emergency period atrocity and naxalite problem also is shown along.  The local politician accuses him of stealing rocks from mountains and selling them.  Takes thumb impression from him for money for 'building' a road from the govt. and swallows the money.  A snake bites his toe and he just cuts it off and continues with his work.  His will power is amazing.  Kudos to Ketan Mehta, the director for bringing out the true essence of Manjhi's work without diluting it.

There is a scene where Indira Gandhi gives a speech with the famous slogan 'Gareebi Hatao'.  Manjhi had gone there to New Delhi to complain about the Govt. officials for cheating the villagers from the road building money, the stage suddenly crumbles.  Manjhi holds it on his shoulders along with other villagers until she finishes her speech.  But he was not allowed to meet her.

A few dialogues, I loved:

'Bhagwan ke bharose par math baithiye...kaa pathaa bhagwan hamare bharose par baithe hain'

I liked this dialogue too..'when I can dream of cutting a mountain with a chisel and hammer, can't you start a newspaper?' Manjhi's dialogue with the news reporter!

After seeing the trailor you might think that Radhika is given lot of importance but after watching the movie completely, we just remember Manjhi and his struggle to carve the road,  which is 360 ft long, 30 ft wide and 25 ft high. After 22 years of work (1960–1983), Dashrath shortened the travel between the village Atri and Wazirganj town from 55km to 15km.

Wiki says:

Manjhi died on 17 Aug 2007 at the age of 73, while suffering from gall bladder cancer at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. He was given a state funeral by the Govt. of Bihar.

Yes, this is a sort of 'Love story' too!!!

Now, a few lines about Nawazuddin.

He is a Chemistry graduate from Gurukul Kangri Vishwa Vidhyalaya, Haridwar.  Born in a Muslim Zamindar family, he did a course in acting in NSD (National school of Drama, New Delhi) also. His wife is Anjali and has got a son and daughter.  Though he became famous a bit late, now, he has got a name for natural acting.

Please don't miss the opportunity to watch this classic movie!

Now, to a clip with the real Dashrath Manjhi who built, Dashrath Manjhi Path:

This Old Black & White Movie Was Interesting, Even Now!

.

This old black & white movie,  'Anupama' brought back many memories for me...some happy and some are not so happy...I was in school when this movie was released (1966).  I had started admiring (!) Dharmendra and my mother went to this movie in Ashok theatre (Chennai) with her cousin, without telling me and I remember crying and not talking to her for some time! Feel silly now! No, we were not going/taken to movies regularly (we were 5 siblings!), but mother used to take us to good movies.  This movie had become famous mainly because of the songs (courtesy: Binaca Geet mala, radio prog.) I didn't get the opportunity to watch it until now!

My ankle has got a ligament tear now which needs lot of rest, so I seem to be watching movies in most afternoons! Because this is a black & white movie, I was postponing, though watched Gurudutt's 'Pyaasa' and some other black & white Bengali movies.

I think I need not go into the full gist of the story of this movie.  This is a 'father-daughter' relationship story, mainly.  The father gets married very late in his life and is very attached to his wife.  She delivers a girl baby and dies.  The father (Tarun Bose), who is quite rich,  hates the sight of his daughter (Sharmila Tagore) because he thinks that she was the reason for his wife's death! he becomes an alcoholic.  She is brought up by their house help.  Because of her father's hatred for her, she becomes an introvert and never mingles with anybody.  Because of the heavy drinking, he falls  ill and is asked to take a break and father and daughter go to Mahabaleshwar.  There, the hero Dharmendra (Poet and teacher) enters.  He is the friend of Arun (Deven Verma) who is supposed to marry Sharmila as per the father's choice! But Arun falls in love with Anita (Shashikala), the father's friend's (David) daughter...oooof...too confusing?!! Well, Dharmendra meets the beautiful eyed, silent girl Sharmila and their love blossoms!

You can see Dharmendra, a bit plump and young one, watching Sharmila, in the above song.

I remembered this song (the tune led me to this song...the music directors are different, though) by Mubarak Begum.  Lovely song, my favourite!

One more surprise is Deven Verma.  He became a famous comedian later but here, he has acted very well and another surprise is Shashikala who is singing this beautiful  song. She became famous in negative roles later!

David was at his best.  He used to get this type of roles mostly in all the movies he had acted.  He and Shubha Khote were always, old people.  Shubha is Dharmendra's mother in this movie!

The hero and heroine never danced or sang together for even a single song, in this movie! They sang separately! But this movie was a hit in those days! Music ruled then!

This is the only song for Dharmendra in the movie.  Lovely song with good lyrics.

I liked Dharmendra in this movie.  He has acted very naturally.  This song is an example.  It looks as if he is really singing...he takes breath at appropriate places too! Hemant Kumar is singing this song and he is the music director for this movie.  This movie became famous for the songs and Sharmila's eyes were 'talk of the town' in those days (My mother's views!).  I was a Dharmendra fan in those days (Did a post on my childhood/teenage, here!)

This 'ankle-rest' break has shown me, that I have my mother and grand mother's 'movie-buff' streak! My mother had a cousin and both of them used to go to movies together often.  She used to tell us the stories at night, I still remember.  We were taken to movies very rarely, but stories, we knew! I can't narrate a story like her, any day! She was good in narrating mythological stories to my sons with all the minute details with lot of expressions!  She used to read a lot, both in Kannada and Tamil.  She worked in a library and used to bring heavy mythological books and read them as if they were fiction books.  I think this movie has triggered my mother's memories...I remembered her often while watching it.  She used to send us with our cousins to very good movies (she would watch them first!).  I think she has influenced me so much that I am able to watch Kangana Ranaut's 'Queen' or Sathyajit Ray's 'Apur Sansar' with equal interest! Unknowingly, we are influenced by our parents and by the time we realize it fully, they are no more.  It hurts sometimes.

The other movies I liked during my movie marathon are:

Selma...I remembered 'Mississippi burning' while watching this. This is a movie on Martin Luther King. Good one.

Diksha...a many award winning movie with a very serious story. The story takes place in Dakshina Kannada, my native place! Nana Patekar, Manohar Singh, KK Raina, Sulabha Arya...a memorable movie.

The Bridges of Madison County... Clint Eastwood directed and acted with my favourite Meryl Streep.  A good romantic movie.

Saving Mr.Banks... Emma Thompson and Tom Hanks movie based on Walt Disney.  Enjoyed.

Contact... a Jodie Foster movie.  A very well made film, though I had watched it many years back. Still enjoyed!

The Constant Gardener...watched this with a heavy heart.  Good movie.

Man of Fire...my favourite Denzel Washington's movie.  Still remember it.

Tamil movie, Devar Magan... A very well-made Kamal, Shivaji Ganesan and Revathy movie.  Had already watched in the theatre, still, watched it again.  Good movie.

Well, I watched so many (one was, 'Sanshodhan', a Nihalani film, but something was missing in the story. Everybody acted well, though.)  but remember only the movies I enjoyed watching.  I am still relaxing! Any recommendations?!

Movie Review - 'Zara Hatke' story...Vicky Donor!

.
I watched three movies in these past 3 weeks and enjoyed them! I am always hesitant to watch movies since most of them are boring and once I start watching any movie, I have to watch it till the end.  I will be cursing and watching! But this time, since the first movie I watched, 'The Good Road' was quite good, I watched 'Kai Poh Che' and yesterday I watched 'Vicky Donor'! I felt like writing about them one by one!

First, 'Vicky Donor':

I had heard about this movie and had noticed while surfing TV channels, the hero Ayushman Khurrana being praised for his acting and singing in the movie.  I think his song was nominated for a couple of awards also.  I liked him in the music reality shows where he anchored.  He seemed like a good actor and singer.  The subject of the story was a bit 'different' and thought it would be an adult type movie.  But I was wrong! I laughed a lot while watching the movie!  This movie was produced by the actor, John Abraham! Now, to the gist of the movie:

Vicky (Ayushman Khurrana, the son of a famous astrologer...I read about it now!) is a good looking, 25 year old, Punjabi unemployed youth, living with his widowed mother who ran a beauty parlour in Delhi's refugee colony in Lajpat Nagar.  He had a grand mother who supported him and spoiled him...you can feel the 'typical Punjabi family' atmosphere here.   Punjabis are always fun-loving people.   He was all the time roaming on the roads and playing cricket.

Dr.Baldev Chadda (Annu Kapoor, my favourite, very talented actor) is a fertility doctor and runs a Fertility Clinic in Dharya ganj (Delhi).  Though he is a good doctor, since he couldn't get healthy sperms (he runs a sperm bank too), he had started losing patients.  He was desperate for a good, healthy donor...he looks for a person like King Alexander...he says,  Aryans like him, are the best race! You can laugh a lot with his analysis of a good donor! Many reasons for infertility quoted by him are real reasons.   He comes across Vicky and after a lot of persuasion, Vicky agrees to 'donate sperm' for some money! First, his sperm was tested and the sperm count was superb.  Then Vicky is offered more and more money for nearly 4 years.  He keeps his 'job' a secret.  Then he comes across Aashima (Yami Gautam, who acted well and looks very beautiful), a Bengali girl.  After lot of oppositions from both sides, they get married.  Then the story gets serious.  I think you better watch it in TV or DVD! You will enjoy!

A lot of research about fertility, had gone before doing this film, it seems.  Annu Kapoor has acted very well.  He got two awards also for this film...Filmfare's 'best supporting actor' award and 60th National Film Award's 'Best supporting actor' award.

Ayushman also should have got some award for this movie.  He is a post graduate and did a course in acting school too.  He seems to be a natural actor.  Hear his song in this movie here (click the link please).  He wrote the lyrics and composed with Kohli. This small budget film became a super-hit movie.  This film is 'with a message', good message for this age! A sequel also is on the making, I heard.  He will go places! A clip from this movie:

Pinjar (2003)...A 'Don't Miss' Movie!

.
Chandra Prakash Dwivedi's movie, Pinjar !
I wanted to watch this movie, 'Pinjar' which means, skeleton,  for a long time and at last did it last Sunday.  I had heard/read a lot about it and it was worth watching this movie at a stretch at home without getting up and going inside! It was so engrossing that nobody dared disturb me!

Do you remember the famous Doordarshan serial, 'Chanakya'? The director and the actor who acted as Chanakya, Dr.Chandra Prakash Dwivedi has directed this movie. This is his debut movie.  The story, is based on a novel, written originally by the famous award winning Punjabi author Amrita Pritam, revolves around the Hindu, Muslim families during partition.

When the movie started from the year, '1946', I knew, it is going to be a very serious movie.  I hadn't read the complete review earlier.  The movie starts with Kulbhushan Karbanda (what a booming voice he has got!), a rich Hindu man  in Amritsar, who is planning to fix his daughter, Paro's marriage and goes to his village in Western Amritsar with his family. 'Rangeela' fame, Urmila Matondkar, is the daughter...she looks beautiful and has acted quite well in this movie! I had admired her in 'Banaras' also. The partition disturbance had started just then.  But the family is happy.  His one son, Trilok (Priyanshu Chatterjee),  was involved in Congress activities.  He stays back and promises to join the wedding activities later.  At the village, the wedding is fixed  with a local rich man, Alok Nath's son, Ramachandra (Sanjay Suri) and he insists on 'give & take' marriage, i.e. he had a daughter whom he wanted to marry to Kulbushan's son and his son would marry Kulbhooshan's daughter!  It was agreed. A grand Punjabi wedding song is shown here! Punjabi songs are colourful and have got good rhythm, so they become famous easily!

The actual story starts now.  Paro has got a sister and both the girls roam in the fields and suddenly a man on a horse chases her and abducts her.  He is a muslim, Rashid is his name and his family had an  old revenge with Kulbhushan's family.  This man is the hero of the movie and Manoj Bajpai has acted very well in this role. Very controlled acting.  He keeps her in an old village house, which looks very primitive. She keeps on crying and after some days, she runs away and goes to her father's place and to her horror, her father refuses to take her in, since she is tainted now and tells her that her sister also will not get a groom if people come to know about her.  She returns and finds Manoj Bajpai waiting for her on the way.  They show him repenting for his act and starts loving her.

Kulbhooshan discusses the truth with Alok nath and Alok nath agrees to marry nephew to Kulbhooshan's second daughter, since Alok's son, Ramchandra, refuses to marry the sister. He had seen Paro once and so he refuses to marry her sister.  Ramachandra's sister is married to Alok nath's son, who reluctantly agrees but stays aloof because of the grief of losing his sister and not finding her.

Paro reluctantly settles down with the muslim family  and then the India-Pakistan partition problem starts.  Kulbhooshan's (his screen name Mohanlal has not registered in my mind!) family whose village is in Pakistan, starts their return journey to India.  Like we know, they go through lots of problems.  Women are abducted and raped by muslims and as per the story, Alok Nath's daughter, Kulbhooshan's daughter in law, who came home for delivery, is abducted and raped by many people.  Kulbhooshan's son, Kirti who came for the wedding starts looking for Paro and comes to know about Rashid and sets his field in fire.  Rashid objects his family who wanted to attack Kulbhooshan's family for this, saying that any brother would do this for the people who hurt his sister.  They show Paro still thinking of her home and Ramchandra...but slowly softening towards Rashid.

Now, the story goes a bit 'filmy' way.  Still, the movie was captivating for a long time.  The songs are good, though one song where Sanjay Suri sings, sitting under a tree, during partition procession is a bit irritating, knowing the situation! Dwivedi should have avoided this or it should have been in the background!

Watch some songs from this movie now:

The above song sounds clearer here, in raaga.com.   but no video! This song is originally from Jagjith Singh's album, 'Marasim'.  Gulzar is the lyricist.  He is the lyricist for all the lovely songs in this movie. Read what he says about Jagjith Singh here.  His voice suits the situation very well.  A great singer, but now, he is no more.

This song is sung by another famous singer, Roop Kumar Rathod and the music director of this movie, Uttam Singh .  He did the music for the famous 'Dil to paagal hai'.  Sounds very patriotic.

Well...this is a 'different' type of movie and you can watch it without getting bored.  Good acting by all of them is a plus point!

This film won the award for 'Best feature film' on National Integration, 'Best Art direction' award for Munish Sappal and 'Best actor' award for Manoj Bajpai.

Barfi - Just RANBIR KAPOOR'S Movie!

BARFI: Picture Courtesy: Hindustan Times
He resembles the young Shammi Kapoor! I had been a fan of Ranbir Kapoor ever since I watched an ordinary storyline film, 'Wake up Sid'.  His talent was visible in that film.  When I saw the trailer of 'Barfi', I wanted to watch the film in the theatre, which we do very rarely nowadays! I and my nieces went to the movie.

The movie started with an interesting scene.  Ranbir, Barfi alias Murphy, as a deaf-mute boy going after the beautiful, talented Ileana alias Shruthi.  Ranbir is too good in these scenes.  He reminded us of Shammi Kapoor and Aamir too! We loved the song 'Picture mein mobile aur bachche dono off rakhna'. Have a look.  Click here.  The lyrics are here.  You will know why we liked it:

picture shuru..........hogayi picture shuru........
picutre mein aaju baju wa lon ka khayal rakhna...........
picute mein samne ki kursi pe na pao rakhna...........
picutre mein aaju baju wa lon ka khayal rakhna...........
picuter mein mobile aur bacche dono off rakhna......
picture shuru........hogayi picture shuru...

I don't want to give out the storyline. Burfi and Shruthi's love story was interesting and later on Jhilmil who is shown as an autistic girl and Barfi's love story also was interesting in a different way.

We laughed a lot watching Chaplin-like Ranbir, for more than an hour and a half.  Then slowly we started looking at each other with a question mark in our face 'What/where is the story' was the question! We noticed some of the other people asking the same question during the interval break!

The actual story is told with lots of flash backs, sometimes confusing us.  It was difficult to remember the continuation of the story! Even then, we liked the movie, say, 70%, just for Ranbir Kapoor! The whole movie is full of Ranbir Kapoor who is going to go places in our film industry.  We know Priyanka Chopra is a great actress...'Fashion' proved it. She had done justice to her role.  Ileana D'Cruz is new to Hindi cinema.  She has acted in Telugu and Tamil movies and has got a reasonably good name, it seems.  She did very well in this movie.  Her facial expression was superb.  The movie is directed by Anuraag Basu.  Music by Pritam, which is OK. Pritam means, I remember the songs of 'Jab we met', which were superb! The whole picture was picturised in Darjeeling and Kolkata.  Darjeeling's beauty is captured very well!

Every magazine says that a number of scenes were copied from English movies.  But they were copied very well and Ranbir is too good an actor.  Have a look at this link if you want to see them!

Watch this song sequence and you will start loving this boy, Ranbir Kapoor! He is very handsome and this should not affect his acting if he acts in serious movies later in his career! His talent should suppress  his looks at that time!

P.S.: Sourab Shukla as a cop, has acted very well. The last scene where Ranbir throws the shoe near Priyanka's window reminded me of Kamal, Sridevi's movie, 'Sadma', where Kamal acts like a monkey to attract Sridevi's attention at the Ooty railway  station.

Two Movies' Review!

I have never watched two movies in 3 days in my life until now...I watched a Tamil movie, 'Kaadalil sodappuvathu yeppadi', on Sunday and a Hindi movie, 'Kahaani', today, i.e. Tuesday! I liked the Tamil one a lot and the Hindi movie just 'one time watch' movie!

Let me tell you about today's movie first...Kahaani.  It had rave reviews everywhere.  This is totally a Vidya Baalan movie.  The hero, or the male main character, Parambrata Chatterjee, a new face also has acted very well.

The story goes like this: Vidya Balan, a Tamil girl married to a Bengali, both software engineers, live in London.  The husband comes to India, (Kolkata), on an assignment and goes missing.  He was keeping contact with her for about two weeks, speaks to her continuously, then no contact at all.  Vidya Baalan,  7 months pregnant now (film name Vidya Bagchi which was pronounced as Bidya Bagchi by Kolkatans), comes to Kolkata in search of him and how much trouble she gets into, is the story.  To give colour, she comes during the famous Dusshera festival of Kolkata!  This is a 100%,  thriller.

I liked the way, Parambrata Chatterjee, a police officer who helps Vidya in her search, gets attracted to her though it is shown subtly, was not elaborated, which I liked a lot.   Vidya Baalan, everybody knows now, is a very good actress and has done very well here too. The director of the movie is Sujoy Ghosh.  But for a Hindi movie, this is a good thriller.

This is not going to be an unforgettable movie. Music is just OK.  But I liked this song of Amitabh, a Bengali song (Robindra sangeeth?) which was played in the end, a lot. Music directors,  Vishal and Shekhar have done well here:

The movie I watched on Sunday was a Tamil one, 'Kaadalil sodappuvathu yeppadi' .  I loved this movie.  The hero of the movie is Siddharth who acted in 'Rang de Basanthi' .  His acting is superb here, in this movie.  The actress, I am seeing her for the first time, Amla Paul also has done her role very well. The story is a simple one.  The hero tells us how he bungled in his love affair.  He tells about his friends' experience also in their affairs.  The whole theatre was laughing for each and every sentence/dialogue.  This is a simple movie but taken interestingly.  Sometimes I felt as if my dialogue with my husband was repeated there! We have fights like these at home! If you follow Tamil very well, don't miss it.  I noticed repeat crowd since the dialogues were shouted before they came in the screen!

Both hero and heroine did not have much make up also.  They were looking very homely and natural which is very rare in our movies! I knew that Siddharth was a good actor but Amala Pal also has acted well here, it was not looking like acting at all! This is being re-made in Hindi too, I read somewhere.  Ranbir Kapoor would suit well for Siddharth's role!

The director of the movie is R.Balaji.  This is his debut movie.  You can know more about him from my blogger friend, Kanagu's review of this movie here.  In fact I went to this movie because of his recommendation!

Have a look at this video sample and you will love it:

P.S.: For once, both are clean movies. We can watch with the family, one thriller and one romance! Both films are box office hits! (Wrote this morning of 18th April, '12)

The Japanese Wife - An Unusual Love Story!

.

I am a big fan of Aparna Sen, both as an actress and a film maker.  I remember admiring her first movie as a director, '36, Chowrangee Lane', in which Shashi Kapoor's wife, Jennifer Kendal played the main character.  It was a serious movie.  Most of you must have seen her 'Mr. & and Mrs. Iyer', a beautiful movie, in which her daughter, Konkona Sen acted as a heroine (opp. Rahul Bose, who is the hero of 'The Japanese wife'). I was interested to watch this movie just because it was Aparna Sen's movie.

Now, to 'The Japanese Wife'! Snehomoy Chatterjee (Rahul Bose), is a school teacher, in a small West Bengal village. The village is like an island.  Only boats connect it to other surrounding towns.  He is fascinated by English and comes across the 'Pen Pal's section in a magazine and starts writing letters to a Japanese friend Miyagi (This girl's sweet English accent is interesting and has acted well). This goes on for a few years and without meeting one another, they plan to get married.  He sends her the white bangles, which the married Bengal women wear, to her.  He wears a wedding band sent by her. They continue to send gifts and mails to each other for many years.  His aunt wants him to marry her friend's daughter, Sandhya, but he continues his friendship with his Japanese wife.  Then the friend's daughter comes and stays with them with her son, as a widow, after her mother's death.  As per the local custom, she wears a white saree and never comes face to face with Snehomoy.  Slowly after sometime, they come to talking terms and even though he becomes slightly attracted to her, he goes back to writing letters to his Japanese wife.  Her son comes closer to him.  That boy also acted very well. Then Miyagi gets ill and Snehomoy goes to all types of doctors and sends herbs and golis to his wife and talks to her over phone to console her, with his broken English. His expression while searching for doctors for his wife's illness is superb.  He is so much in love with his wife that he takes 6 months' unpaid leave to search for doctors to cure her illness. Such devotion! The love and concern for his unseen wife is visible in his face, so well.  Then one allopathy doctor asks him to bring his wife to him for treatment, he gets very upset.  On the way back, he is caught in a storm and then dies of pneumonia.  In the end, they show his white saree clad Miyagi, with shaved head, coming to his/her home.

Moushumi Chatterjee who has acted as his aunt (mausi), was a famous actress in her hay days and here, she has done her job superbly. Raima Sen (Moon Moon Sen's daughter) as Sandhya was a surprise.  I know her as an average actress - sort of 'item girl' actress. Her acting is superb, here, in this movie. She must be a director's actress.  If the director is good, she is good! She has got huge, expressive eyes! Rahul Bose, is a good actor.  Here, the subdued acting as a villager, takes him to a higher level. His body language is just like a villager's. His slow English with typical Bengali accent is very endearing! He keeps on saying, "my English while writing is better than while talking"! Miyagi's (Japanese actress, Chigusa Takaku) English also matched with his English! Her soft voice and expression is very interesting.  Oh, I have to mention about the kite competition, which is very interesting! Snehamoy sends the kites his wife sent him, to the sky, as if he is connecting with his wife. I liked the way the villagers' and Sandhya's son's interaction here. The movie is like our normal movie in this portion! The picturization of the movie is superb!

The first half of the movie is tooooo slow.  You need lot of patience to continue watching! The next half of the movie speeds up a bit.  But in the end, you feel that you have watched a good movie! Rahul Bose and Aparna Sen give us that feeling! I watched the movie without sub-titles for the first half an hour, thinking that I will just follow it with Hindi words with an 'o' accent! But no, it was difficult! Well, did I tell you? This is a Bengali movie!

Let me show a small video clip, so that you can have a taste of the movie. The way Rahul Bose grows up from a young man to middle aged man...his hesitation in body movement in the middle age...well, he is superb, thanks to Aparna Sen. A clean movie to watch...no item songs or dances! No songs at all! Still, I had a good feeling after the movie was over!

Edited to add on 21.12.11: Though I have given the wikipedia link to the movie, I thought I should mention that the movie is based on the novel of the same name by the Bengali writer, Mr. Kunal Basu.

Edited to add on 22.12.11!: Please read my friend Kavita's comment in the comment section! It is interesting!

Govind Nihalani's Classic Movie - VIJETA (1982)!

.

I heard this classical raaga based song of Asha Bhosle in the radio programme, Sangeet Sarita, a couple of days back.  The song is based on raaga Aahir Bhairav, a morning raaga and Asha's voice was impeccably melodious.  Rekha is, as usual, superb in the song video.  Then I saw the name of the movie, 'Vijeta'.  I remembered that I had been planning to watch the movie for a long time and I did, today! And it is a Govind Nihalani, my favourite director's movie! I have watched, Ardh Sathya, Party, Aakrosh etc. and if I mention 'Tamas', the TV serial, it is enough to know of his calibre...I remember its impact on us when it was transmitted in Doordarshan, in the 80's.  He was the cinematographer for the movie 'Gandhi' and he has done this job for this movie, Vijeta, too. Now, hear the song first and you will know why I got hooked to the song and the movie. This is the only song in this whole movie and this is a Hindi movie!

This is the story of how Nihal Singh's (Shashi Kapoor) son, Angadh (Shashi's real son, Kunal Kapoor), matures in his life from a confused teenager to a fighter pilot.  Neelima (Rekha), as Angadh's protective mother, has done her job, superbly.  I had never thought that Kunal Kapoor could act so well amongst the talented actors like Shashi and Rekha.  He did his role very well.
The story begins with the India-Pakistan partition scene (though they don't show it, but just hints) where Shashi loses most of his family members and so, often gets nightmares.  His mother, Dina Pathak offers her first grandson to the Sikh religion, as is the practice in many Punjabi families as a 'mannath'. So, Angdh is brought up as a Sikh boy. This is not a partition story or war story, but revolves around the emotions of the parents, Shashi, Rekha and their son.    Shashi is shown as a sort of weak personality.  Because of a short extra-marital affair, his wife Neelima is emotionally detached from him and the friction reflects on their son Angadh.  He is restless and is not able to concentrate in his studies.  So he was sent to a boarding school but he leaves it halfway and comes home.  So, there is fiction between father and son and Rekha is very protective of her only son.  Then, her brother, Om Puri (this superb actor comes in a short role, in this movie) suggests to Angadh to join Air Force so that he becomes focused in his life with the discipline he has to go through over there. Here, again, the father is against it.  But Angadh joins the Air Force.
Then the story develops to show how Angadh gets accustomed to the atmosphere at the Air force, their training, his friends and how he changes into a self confident person as a fighter pilot and comes closer to his father.  The training of the fighter pilot and later, the war scene (Indo-Pakistan war scenes are not shown in detail, but just the scenes where Angadh's personality is developed) are shown superbly.  Govind Nihalani is a good cinematographer and it is visible in these scenes. Wikipedia says:

The film is notable for some rarely seen aerial photography of combat aircraft active with the IAF in 1980's.  The central character of Angadh himself, is a MiG-21 pilot and is shown flying the aircraft in ground attack role in the 1971 India-Pakistan war.  Much of the movie, including the climax involving MiG-21bis, was shot at Pune.  The IAF No.4 squadron (the Oorials), provided the pilots and planes for the film's aerial sequences.  The movie included good colour footage of the Oorials aircraft in fight and in operations.
I am a great admirer of Shashi Kapoor's movies (well, some of them!), like Junoon, Kalyug, Kabhie Kabhie etc. People who know/have seen Rekha's movies, will always be her fan.  I can't mention her movies because it is a looooong list! She is one of my favourite actors.  Khubsoorat, Kalyug, Silsila, Utsav...no, I will stop here!

Let me post some good scenes from the movie, so that you will definitely watch this movie after reading this review.  I am very much impressed by it, you know!

The dialogue by Shafi Inamdar of 'Yeh jo hai Zindagi' fame, is superb, here.  You can see KK Raina also here.  Amrish Puri as Angadh's Fighter pilot instructor, has done a very good job in this movie.  Supriya Patak is a stage actress (Angadh's girl friend) and so naturally, has done very well. Now, to the videos:

The Blue Mug...Down Memory Lane!

.

Today morning when I opened my blog, I saw on the right side of the page, under 'Popular Post', a series of posts, mostly about temples, festivals etc.! It was funny. It looked as if I am very religious and write about only temples and rituals/festivals! No, I am not very religious but follow some minimum customs, give importance to festivals, play shlokas in the morning etc. I believe in god/or some super power and strongly believe that if we hurt somebody knowingly, in any way, we will get it back twice. Otherwise, as my nieces often say, I am a 'modern maami'! They treat me as their friend...they are young girls, you know! I am so happy about it!

My son asked me, the other day, if I was interested in attending a play (drama, we call it, here!), The Blue Mug...a play by a Bombay director, Atul Kumar and the actors sounded familiar too. I always wanted to see Hindi/English plays by Bombay productions (now, many of them are coming here, to Chennai too!). I said 'yes' to my son, happily! Then he said it was on Sunday, the Janmaashtami day...! Phooof, my happy bubble burst, 'tuppp'! Then he said it started at 7.30 pm...the bubble of hope began to bloat again! Then I said I will do the pooja as early as possible and we can rush to the theatre! My son and husband started laughing...so much love and respect for Lord Krishna! My sister in law doesn't know even now, in what way I did the pooja...poor Krishna! It was jet speed! I got up early in the morning, did murukku (chakli), Uppu cheedai, vella cheedai etc., drew rangloli with a long line of Krishna's feet from the gate to the pooja room, without talking to anybody! And we made it to the theatre 'on time'!

The venue was an auditorium of Lady Andal school, which is a very old school, in a spacious area, with a beautiful, huge banyan tree (the picture is displayed at the end). I hadn't read any review of the play before. Then it started. One by one, the characters started narrating their childhood, adolescent memories, with slightly dim light focusing on them.

The main story had Ranvir Shorey as an amnesia patient being treated/questioned by his doctor, Shirpa Singh! Ranvir remembers only until he was 20 years old, about what happened at his home in Punjab with his brother, father etc. during the terrorist attack period. The doctor asks him to look at the mirror, which he reluctantly does and shouts that what was visible there was his father, not him. He refuses to come to terms with the present times. He even forgets to recognise the doctor after his narration was over! The language was Hindi with heavy Punjabi accent, but his narration was superb. Though, it was difficult for us to follow the fast Punjabi Hindi, we laughed for whatever we understood! Except Shirpa Singh, I am familiar with others from TV serials and films. The other characters spoke in Hinglish, thank god! Vinay Patakh's (Beja Fry fame) adolescent narration was superb, he is a good actor, we know! Rajath Kapoor had done a good job and made us laugh a lot. I admired Sheeba Chadha who narrated how she dreamed of drinking milk from a bottle with a rubber nipple and tried it too in her teenage...it was a laugh riot in the theatre! I had seen her in a TV serial 'Antaraal' with Om Puri in the main role. It was a very good serial, but was stopped abruptly. I still remember the story!
Does anyone else remember?

All the artists did well in their role, but still, for us, something was missing. The quality was there, no doubt about it. No stage decoration, just focusing lights. The characters were not connected to each other till the end.

In the end, the cast and audience interaction was there in front of the auditorium. The artists looked very tired and interesting questions were not asked by anyone, so it was sort of boring. But, somehow, we enjoyed the evening and laughed a lot!

I forgot to mention one interesting thing...3 or 4 best songs of Hemant Kumar were played in the beginning and I was very very happy about it. I love his voice. And one of his song, Zindagi Pyar ki do char ghadi hoti hai' which was very apt for the 'down memory lane' story theme, was played in between, during the play as sort of background music!

We took this picture during the 'interaction between audience and artists' time. They said that the story is based on a novel called, 'The man who mistook his wife for a hat' (funny title, isn't it?!).

Now, have a look at the beautiful banyan tree at the auditorium:

Edited in the evening: Just shifted the first half of the sentence to the second half and the meaning looks better!

These are the few of my favourite movies!

Destination Infinity asked me to do the tag 'My top three movies of all time'. I had been writing this post for a few days now, keeping on changing the movies. Even now, I am not 100% happy about the list...tonight more movie names will flash in my dream!

English: I keep forgetting the names of the movies all the time, as you all know by now, my name is 'maradhi manni'! So, I decided to ask my son 'which movies do I talk about a lot?' and he gave a list and I picked up just 3, from the list!

1. Gods Must be Crazy-II:

We repeatedly watch this movie, when some get together is at home or if we are depressed and not in mood, this movie lifts up our mood! Every frame was shot with so much thoughtfulness, in this movie. The story happens in the Kalahari desert in South Africa. The super hero in the movie is Nixau
, who was (he is no more now), from the Kalahari desert itself. His South African language is funny to the ears with lots of clucking sounds. The story starts with his two small children chasing the elephant poachers' truck and lose their way. Nixau starts looking for them and encounters many weird people...the movie is hilarious!

I love the different types of background music which is given for each and every character. Have a taste of it here and please watch this movie if you haven't watched it yet!

2. Rain Man:

Both Hoffman and Tom Cruise are my favourite actors. I don't get bored of watching this movie again and again. Dustin Hoffman has lived the character of a person affected by autism. Tom Cruise is his brother and wonders why his father bequeathed a huge amount in the will in Hoffman's name, whose whereabouts, he did not know, until then. So he looks for his long lost brother and the drama begins. We can understand why the two characters are behaving the way they are, in this story. Truly believable story.

I was wondering if I should name 'Philadelphia' as my favourite too, then thought this one is better.

3. Catch Me If You Can:

This movie is based on a true story. DiCaprio acts as Frank Abagnale Jr., a conman who changes his name and character, at the drop of a hat and the main job of his is, cheque forgery. He became so skillful that the FBI eventually turned to him for help in catching other cheque forgers. Steven Spielberg has directed the film. Tom Hanks acts as the FBI agent and he is a natural actor and my favourite too. You can notice DiCaprio changing from a small innocent boy to an adult with a cunning face, later. A very interesting movie.

Hindi:

1. Ek Ruka hua Faisla: I looked out in imdb for this movie and it says, it is a TV movie, directed by Basu Chatterjee. This is a remake of '12 Angry Men' but the Hindi version is equally good, without any female character or jhatka matka songs. Very interesting till the end. KK Raina, Pankaj Kapur and Annoo Kapoor have acted very well.

Smita Patil and Amol Palekar's movie. Anant Nag, Naseeruddin Shah and Amrish Puri also have acted in the great Shyam Benegal's movie. I can never forget Amol Palekar's eyes, the way he looks at Smita...couldn't sleep at night on the day I watched this movie for the first time. The story of the film is based on a Marathi actress and you can see how Smita transforms from a young happy, innocent girl to a matured, wise, adult woman. A serious movie, though.

Dharmendra, Sharmila Tagore, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan have acted in the Hrishikesh Mukherjee's comedy movie! I was a great fan of Dhrmendra when I was a teenager. When I think back, I like this movie and a couple of other movies of him, that is all. I wonder how I was crazy enough to collect his photos from the 'picture post' magazine and save them (I have got them even now...feel funny looking at them now!) All the four of them acted very well in this movie, even Sharmila Tagore! The songs are good too! And the famous Om Prakash is also there in the main role!

We watch it again and again, whenever it is screened in our TV!

I was shuffling movies in my mind, whether to name 'Dil Chahta hai' or 'Lagaan' (some friends have already mentioned this movie as their favourite and this movie is in the top place in my heart, but I wanted to mention some other movie) and came to 'Sarfarosh'!

Aamir Khan and Nasiruddin Shah acted equally well. The film is based on Pakistani terrorists infiltrating into our country with arms via Rajasthan. Nasiruddin Shah acts as a famous ghazal singer from Pakistan. Aamir's family members are killed by the terrorists and he quits his medical college and concentrates in finding the terrorists by joining the Police force.

The story develops like a thriller. This movie was released during the Kargil war and became talk of the town. As usual, Aamir and Nasiruddin Shah competed with each other in acting. This movie will have an important place in my heart.

Tamil:

Sridevi, Kamal Haasan and Silk Smitha (Silk Smitha acted very well in this movie, she is very beautiful too!) combination in Balu Mahendra's direction. Superb movie. I somehow like Sridevi in Tamil movies than Hindi movies. Her voice also is natural while speaking in Tamil. Kamal is Kamal always, the superb actor. Sridevi's innocence is natural. We get so involved in the movie that we switch it off during the last train scene because we can never avoid the tears in our eyes. The movie is full of melodious songs.

I was wondering whether to mention 'Vedham puthithu' or 'Devar Magan' or 'Mudhalvan' or 'Muthal mariyaathai' or this one. But Shivaji in 'Mudhal Mariyaadai' should be here, I felt. In Bharathiraja's direction, Shivaji did a mature controlled role and Radha's full potential came out in this movie. But, a big BUT, 'Anbe Sivam' cannot be left out!

In 'Anbe Sivam' (Love is God), Kamal is a communist and Madhavan is a capitalist and both are just opposite in nature. Kamal has a distorted face with a twitch and many other complications after he met with an accident. Madhavan is a chocolate boy, pampered by his parents and who has never faced with any problems until he was stranded this time at the airport because of the heavy rains, in Bhubaneshwar. Then, they show how the two of them clash with each other (many funny occasions are also there!) because of their opposite nature. Madhavan's attitude slowly changes in course of the movie. Sunder, C. has directed the movie but everyone knows that Kamal is the one who has done that. A very good movie to watch.

3. Ramanaa:

I am not very fond of Vijayakanth...don't like his red-tinged eyes and his dialogue delivery at all. But in this movie, he acted very well as an anti-corruption police official and blended into the character. The storyline is superb and we can relate to all the incidents with our lives...esp. the dead body 'being' treated at the hospital with a bill for a hefty sum.

This movie is directed by the now 'Ghajini' famous, A.R. Murugadoss. He has done a very good job. The incidents shown in the movie are so well directed that we feel that they are true incidents. They can happen to us too.

One more movie of my favourite Kamal Haasan! I had to list this movie in my favourites! Kamal acts as a mentally affected person and is in a mental hospital. His room mate tells him that an angel named Abirami will marry him after he gets out of the hospital. So Kamal starts looking out for her and 'finds' her and gets obsessed with her. He is very intelligent otherwise but is surrounded by people who try to use him for their advantage.

This is a beautiful movie which shows the love between him and his Abirami, like a poem. Take a look at this song and you can see for yourself!

Sorry, D.I., I didn't stick to the 3 movie tag! I added one extra movie in Tamil and Hindi! I like most of Manirathnam's movies. I didn't list them here because you have already done so!

Whoever reads this post and feels like doing this tag, please do. If you inform me, I will be very very happy to read and know about your favourite movies and if I had missed a good movie in your list, I can watch it!
