I had watched the Malayalam superstar, Mohanlal in a Tamil movie, 'Iruvar' (a Manirathnam movie) many many years back. I can't follow Malayalam but can understand vaguely! When my niece said that this movie was a very good one and very famous (it was running full houses everywhere, it seems and was going towards a block buster of the year, '13 in Malayalam filmdom), I thought I can give it a try! Well...it was a good decision! Yesterday, I watched a very good movie which will never be forgotten, I think!
Georgekutty (Mohanlal) is a happily married man with two daughters. His wife is Rani (Meena, a very famous Tamil and Malayalam actor). Georgekutty is a Fourth standard failed man and married to Rani, a 10th standard failed woman ... both of them tease each other on this subject! He worked hard and became the owner of a 5 acre rubber plantation. But he enjoys working as a local town's cable operator and enjoys watching movies all the time...he gets so involved with the movies that he implements the situations in his daily life wherever possible! Have a look at this lovely song where you can feel their happiness as a close family.
Then, an incident happens in their lives which totally changes their normal life. The movie is all about how he solves the situation taking clues from the movies he had been watching for so many years. I don't want to write more about the story here! I try to write 'no spoilers' review!
The director of the film, Jeethu Joseph has taken the story so well that nothing looks filmy or dramatic situations. Everyone acted very naturally and without much filmy make up. Malayalam films are famous for these things!
I have to mention the Villain of the film, Kalabhavan Shajon, a famous actor in Malayalam films, I was told. He acted very well at par with Mohanlal in this movie. This movie is keeping on winning many awards, it seems.
They are planning to remake this film in Tamil, with Vikram in Mohanlal's role. Should wait and see if he comes at least a bit near to Mohanlal's acting! The scenery of the typical Kerala town, Thoduppuzha can be scene in its full glory! And I understood nearly 80% of the dialogues, which was a surprise to me!
This is a 'must see' movie!

A still from 'Drishyam' movie! |

Thanks dear for the wonderful review, gonna to watch it this soon...
Nice review, well written! :)
Sandhyaji, this is your first post in 2014, been eagerly waiting to read your new post - guessed it'd be on an interesting pilgrimage trip or on birds or on music :) But you choose to review a good movie :)
I watched Iruvar and Mohanlal is a versatile natural actor but we can notice how challenging it was for Prakash Raj to match him and he did justice to his role.
And you understood 80% of the dialogues? May be you'll soon start speaking Malayalam!! ;)
Will watch Drishyam soon, thank you for sharing the song and trailer! :)
Take care :)
PRIYA ANANDAKUMAR: Please do, Priya!
SAI CHARAN: Hahaha...you know me so well, Sai! Yes, I wanted to write about my favourite subject in my first post for the new year! I have got a couple of posts pending. But this movie pushed me to write about it since it was a good movie. If I postpone, I might skip it!
I never expected to understand/follow Malayalam this much! It was a nice feeling! Thank you!
Thanks for the excellent review. Do you know the name of the Tamil movie being shot now? Thanks.
If it is released as a Tamil movie, I will watch it. I can understand Malayalam movies too (somewhat), let me see... :)
Destination Infinity
PS: I am not able to recognize meena in that photo!

Must have been indeed a good movie!
Tamil & Malayalam are sister languages and in fact I have been reading articles on the closeness of Tamil & Samskritam.Dr.R.Nagaswamy's book Mirror of a Tamil & Sanskrit says it all. So all our BHARATEEYA languages are derived from Samskritam and that goes to prove our Samskriti throughout Bharat is ONE.
The British did a wonderful job to tell us that we all are Dravidians in the South and the Aryans came from outside Bharat and drove the Dravidians into the south thus propagating the Aryan Invasion a Theory.
So you yourself have seen that you could understand 80% of Malayalam!
Hi.mami.very well written review.. i dont think we will enjoy the tamil version after watching the malayalam. Kalbhavan Shajan is a comedian actor basically but have done a good job as a villian in this movie..
I am hoping to see it soon. Its 'house-full' this weekend :)
I just viewed the songs. I hope they do the Tamil version with Kamal Hassan instead of Vikram. Kamal will steal the glory from Mohanlal. I like Mohanlal.
SG: No, I don't know the name of the Tamil version!
Vikram is quite a good actor. Did you watch his 'saami'? That and many other movies of his are good. I think he will be OK.
Yes, I am a fan of Kamal and I am upset to see him getting older and older! Hope he gets roles like Amitabh and entertain us always!
DESTINATION INFINITY: If you understand Malayalam, it is better to watch the original than the re-make. They might add masala in the Tamil version!
VC MOULI: Unlike Tamil, Malayalam has got more Sanskrit influence, I feel. It has got Tamil words too! Only the accent is a problem for us, other people!
Anyway, I watched a very good movie!
SHARU: Yes, Sharada! He has done his job very well here! Handling comedy role successfully is not a joke, I feel. He should be a good actor to do that. Thank you!
SHAIL: It was housefull everywhere in Kerala, I was told! Best of luck!
Thanks for the review & videos. Plan to definitely see this movie !
you have made me so curious now, since I am neither going to watch this nor tamil, why not tell me the full story:)
Sounds like an interesting movie, Sandhya! I would love to see it. Maybe I can get a CD with English subtitles...
RAMAKRISHNAN RAMANATHAN: Please watch! You will love this! This is an extraordinary movie of recent years!
RENU: Nooooooooooooo! Watch this movie with subtitles, Renu!!!
MANJU JOGLEKAR: You might get the dvd of this movie within a month with subtitles. It is very good!
Sounds like a good movie, will watch it. Is t still running in theaters or is it quite old?
When we see some good movies we are so eager to share it with others, in this I am also just like you.
Thanks for the review, now you have got me interested.
Just a couple of days ago (in Thrissur) someone told me this is a very good movie... a hit for Mohanlal after a long time
RAMA ANANTH: It is still running in Sathyam theatres and some other theatres. It must be there in Bangalore too! Watch it!
ASHOK: I haven't seen many malayalam movies. This one was good. I know Mohanlal, Mammootty etc.!
Looks like a pretty good movie...should get to see it !!
I love the song too !!
UMS REFLECTIONS: Yes, it is a good movie. If you think you can't follow the language, watch it with subtitles, Uma!
Sounds like a really good watch SandhyaMa. Will try and catch it on DVD perhaps.
These days a lot of Malayalam cinema is experimental and story-driven. It's refreshing and really commendable.
Mohanlal is usually a treat to watch :)
I'll probably have to wait till the CD is released. But this is one movie I'm so looking forward to!
CRAFTY SHINES: Yes, Mohanlal's movies are good always. I have watched a couple of movies of his and Mammootty's. Otherwise not very familiar with Malayalam movies. This one is a real good one!
USHA PISHARODY: This might come in TV also, right? But don't miss it, Usha! Very rarely we get to watch a movie with a strong storyline!
Dear Mami,
I saw the movie in Kannada when I was in US, last week, I saw papanasam, wonderful it was, nice acting by kamal
Nice movie, enjoyed kamal's acting
PREMA VISWANATHAN: Welcome to my space, Prema! Happy to see your comment here!
Which Kannada movie? Thithi?
Yes, Paapanasam is good and Kamal's acting is superb. Since I had watched the Malayalam original movie, it was there in my mind all the time. But Kamal is always Kamal! Thank you!
