KBC, Kaun Banega Crorepati or ABC, Amitabh Bachchan Charisma...!

Kaun Banega Crorepati - We have become addicted to this programme and this is the 4th season. As everybody knows, Amitabh Bachchan hosted this show in 2000 (KBC 1), which is based on a UK game show 'Who wants to be a millionaire?'. I had seen a few episodes of the UK show and ours is a replica of that show. The way the anchor interacts with the hot-seat participants, like showing concerns in their personal lives and prompting them a little to use the lifelines when they give wrong answers (!), everything was there, too!

Still, we admire Amitabh who is conducting this show like a pro, yes, he is a pro, no doubt about that! He has got a fatherly figure, very intelligent, familiar face, everything. We can see him enjoying meeting common people and knowing about their day-to-day lives, their problems, their special qualities etc. Every participant is in awe of him! Harshwardhan Navathe won the one crore prize in KBC 1.

Many of his famous phrases were used in every household, like 'lock karen?', addressing the computer as 'computerji', etc. Often he uses the phrase 'aap oomda khel rahe hain'...I had never heard the word 'oomda' until then!

KBC 2 (2005) was also anchored by Amitabh and because of health grounds, the show was shelved after 61 episodes of the total of 85 episodes.

Then KBC 3 came, which was anchored by Shah Rukh Khan. After some episodes, we got used to him. He had a huge shadow of Amitabh hovering behind him, though!

In the current show, some interesting people did very well, many of them came from very small villages. Amitabh really loved to interact with them. He doesn't seem to have any ego problem. One person won Rs.One crore and the celebration of winning also was done, with flowers falling on him from the ceiling etc., but when he tried to attempt the Rs.5 crore question, he lost and went home with Rs.3 lakhs. Over confidence is not a good nature, Amitabh said.

A couple of days back, a 37 year old woman, Rahat Taslim from a small town of Giridih in Jharkhand, became the first woman to win the prize money of Rs. one crore. She is a simple but intelligent woman, a Muslim from an unknown village, still under the social and conservative norms of the 'purdah'. She was married off very early but did her BA (Hon.) in History, after her children were grown up and taught tailoring to the local women and children that earned her 2000-3000 rupees in order to run the house. Her husband works in a public sector concern with a salary of Rs.6,000. She has got a 17 year old son and a daughter.

In an interview to the NDTV, Amitabh says, "She never in her life had opened even a bank account of their meagre earnings, had never seen the lakhs that came to her in the form of the zero's on her checque (she counted the zeros in one crore... one, two, three, four - seven zeroes and her typical laughter came after that, with 'yakeen hi nahin ho raha hai'!) and had never ever imagined that she would get to the hot seat at KBC".

She never had any doubt while deciding upon using the lifelines or while answering the correct answers. Amazing. Yes, the questions were not that difficult for normal educated people, but even many of them (educated ones, who were always doubtful and used lifelines for ordinary questions!) struggled for replying ordinary questions. This lady answered happily and when she started winning 25 lakh, she started saying 'yakeen hi naheen ho rahaa hai' and kept on repeating the sentence until she won Rs. One crore.

We felt that Amitabh rejoiced more happily than Rahat, when she won the money! He was nearly jumping with joy! He kept on praising her in his blog and even in the next day's show! He said, "What a fantastic moment for the game. What a fantastic moment for women in our country - that given an opportunity, they had the ability to shine like never before. And that the heart of India resides in that little village or town which we know nothing about!"

Now, Rahat wants to open a boutique and study further! Have a look at her and her family with the great Amitabh!

You can watch here, the last 10 minutes of the programme, where Rahat Taslim wins Rs. One crore! I know most of you, must be watching this programme!

We are wondering how to spend the 9 to 9.30 evening time after this programme is over in a week or so! We are 'sighing' like Amitabh, laughing like him and use his phrases, often at home!

Edited to add (28.11.10): I came across this video now. This is the interview with Amitabh about his view of Rahat and the programme. He is still praising Rahat!

Some people said in the comment section that they were not able to view the video of Rahat winning the contest and some people were able to watch it. I have updated again with a better video. Hope all of you will be able to view this and enjoy!

I have grown up watching Amitabh's cinema. He would always be special to me. He has this ability to connect with people, poor or rich, semi literate or erudite. Most people these days do not have it, that is what makes him so special.
A very well deserved win. Hope the lady sees more success in her life.

That was fascinating, Sandhya. I don't watch it here but remember Bachchan's Charisma form the older series. He certainly has a way with words, and his manner is impeccable. And he connects so well with people!

It is so heartwarming to read about the lady's win! It is really great that somebody wins like this!

Swaram: Both of us, I and my husband are addicted to this programme. We compete with each other to guess the answers!

Yes, many people won a reasonable amount of money from small towns which might be very useful for them and it was nice to watch the happiness in their face!

Aparna: Amitabh can interact with any type of people and make them happy!

Yes, Rahat is very smart lady and will make use of the money in a good way, Aparna!

Amitabh: He was with Amar Singh then!

sm: Thank you!

wordsndreamz: Yes, he can connect with any type of people, Smitha!

We feel happy while watching them trying to do their best and winning money which will be very important to them! Please watch the video, Smitha, you will like it!

Kavita: Yes, I know how busy mothers are when the kids are small. I have crossed that stage now!

I have re-posted the video and checked it, it is playing! Thanks for pointing it out! I am still learning by making mistakes!

Yes it is the personal charm of Amitabh that invests such high value and interest to KBC.No doubt the curiosity to test our knowledge on the questions asked and the thrill of watching the winning amount grow along with suspense all make it a pleasurable experience

Sandhya, I used to watch it the first season and after that lost interest in it. Now 9pm means Master Chef Australia... :)

What a pleasant joyful, and touching story.

Sandhya said...

KParthasarathy: Yes, it is very interesting because the questions are not very tough (!) and so we, ordinary people also can relate to the programme and guess the answers nearly correctly and be happy to know that we are a bit intelligent too! Sometimes it is like a thriller, when a person won one crore and then wanted to try the 5 crore question and lost everything and got only 3 lakhs! We discuss for two days about it and give the verdict that he should not have been very greedy! Isn't it interesting?!

UmaS: I have watched a couple of episodes of Master Chef Australia and it is interesting. This programme is interesting to both of us, so more enjoyable for us now, Uma!

arvind1187: I am happy to know that you and your parents enjoyed the video!

He is an interesting and respectable person, Arvind!

varunavi: Did you watch the video, Saritha! It is interesting and you can watch more in you tube!

SG: Yes, SG!

thats for sharing this.. :) As there is no STB in my home no pay channels were coming and apart from cricket this is the only programme I am missing..

Amitabh has great Charisma and to host a show like this one must need that :)

sharu said...

nice post, mami.. yes I agree that the prog. is hit because of Amitabh.. and I noticed that this time most of them are winning atleast 25 lakhs.. the questions seems to be bit easy and I used to wonder how they could afford this much amount.. may be that's why they are palnning to end it... anyways it was nice to read your blog.

Sandhya said...

BK Chowla: Yes, never! Do you watch the programme?

Destination Infinity: Maybe! But for people like us, this programme is interesting because the questions are easy and we can guess the answers to most of the questions too!

writerzblock: Hahaha!

Kanangu: Did you watch the video, Kanagu, it is interesting!

Sharu: Money comes from advertisements and SMSes too!

The reason for this programme being a hit one, is because the questions are answerable by normal people like us, too!

Thank you, Sharada!

Destination Infinity: Sure will do it as early as possible! Naming just 3 movie is a tough job, though, thank you!

kanagu: I have updated it again now. Hope you will be able to watch it now. I have added one more video!

Some people have watched it and some weren't able to...the comment section says so! I checked it now and it seems to work, Kanagu!

Oh, this show is definitely a trend setter and its only because of AB Sr.presence ! Now that my shift timings have become like that of a normal person, I could get to watch this show. But I really dont like the celebrity episodes. They are all so fake ! :D

Shoba said...

Manni, your post is replete with details about the show and I loved reading it.

It is funny that the first adjective that popped into my head was "greedy" (after reading the part about a contestant going for 5 cr, but ending up with 3 lakh). Amazing, that Amitabh didn't label it "greediness" & instead chose his words carefully to say "over confidence"!

It is no wonder he is so popular! There is always something to learn :)!

I'm late commenting here-sorry Sandhya!

I don't usually watch this programme, though I do think Amitabh Bacchan is a fabulous actor and has a really charismatic voice!

Glad to read that the prize of 1 crore was won by a deserving person. :)

I enjoyed the earlier KBCs more. But still do watch it in parts.

Vrinda said...

I do not watch it regularly but I've seen the episode of Rahat Taslam. One thing I observed in this season is, the questions are a bit easy.

Any ways she played the game very well. She was very confident.

Nice post sandhya.

Sandhya said...

vimmuuu: Yes, we never watch saregamapa or kbc if stars are involved. We shift to 'super singers' in Vijay TV!

Shobha: Welcome here, Shobha and thanks for the comment!

He is a very sophisticated person. He never gets angry when the participants behave very silly sometimes...doesn't show anything on his face. He admires people from small towns than the engineers and doctors from our 'sophisticated' society! He gives 100% attention to them when they talk, with a broad, happy, eager smile, did you notice?

Ramesh: Please watch this video, you will enjoy!

Manju: Yes, she deserves it 100%. She is a smart lady and she will use the money properly.

Radha: Even I felt like that because earlier, the questions were from various fields and a bit tough too and it activated our brains! This time, they were too easy and I didn't like the questions about Hindi proverbs. How will the people from outside the proper Hindi belt answer them?

Vrinda: Have I seen you here earlier? Anyways, welcome and am happy to see you!

Yes, Rahat played very well without getting nervous at any time, which others very rarely did!

KBC and Amitabh Bachchan are synonymous. He does it effortlessly. The host is The Amitabh Bachchan... yet it is not The Amitabh Bachchan...

No-one else can host it with so much elan. The perfectionist Khan very wisely decided not to step into his shoes... while the K... K... K... K... Khan learnt a valuable lesson... in not biting more than he can chew.

Must say... this is one show that is totally worth our time.

Years ago... there used to be another quiz show - "Crossfire" - hosted by Siddharth Basu himself. No wonder he knows what the content should be and how such a show should be formatted...

Sandhya said...

Roshmi Sinha: I remember watching Siddharta Basu's show. Our whole family were involved while watching it!

Amitabh hasn't got even a little bit of ego. He seems to be happy all the time and did you notice yesterday? Every participant irrespective of age and gender, wanted to hug him. This will never happen with anybody else! It is not only his age which is making people to love him, but the way he interacts with people adds to it.

Rahat is a muslim woman and still she was comfortable with Amitabh and her husband too admired him. Amitabh mentioned about her proudly even yesterday!

AB is awesome in KBC. I liked his earlier movies, Sholay but did not really like him similar kind of dusham dusham. I liked him Black.

But he is the best in KBC.
