I WOULD LOVE TO BE A WHALE! YOU...?!!
Recently, in a large French city, a poster featuring a young, thin and tanned woman appeared in the window of a gym.
It said: "THIS SUMMER DO YOU WANT TO BE A MERMAID OR A WHALE?"
A middle aged woman, whose physical characteristics did not match those of the woman on the poster, responded publicly to the question posed by the gym.
To Whom It May Concern:
Whales are always surrounded by friends (dolphins, sea lions, curious humans). They have an active sex life, they get pregnant and have adorable baby whales. They have a wonderful time with dolphins, stuffing themselves with shrimp. They play and swim in the seas, seeing wonderful places like Patagonia, the Barren Sea and the coral reefs of Polynesia. Whales are wonderful singers and have even recorded CDs. They are incredible creatures and virtually have no predators other than humans. They are loved, protected and admired by almost everyone in the world.
Mermaids don't exist. If they did exist, they would be lining up outside the offices of Argentinean psychoanalysts due to identity crisis. Fish or human? They don't have a sex life because they kill men who get close to them, not to mention how could they have sex? Therefore they don't have kids either. Not to mention who wants to get close to a girl who smells like a fish store?
The choice is perfectly clear to me; I want to be a whale.
P.S. We are in an age when media puts into our heads the idea that only skinny people are beautiful, but I prefer to enjoy an ice cream with my kids, a good dinner with a man who makes me shiver and a coffee with my friends. With time we gain weight because we accumulate so much information and wisdom in our heads that when there is no more room, it distributes out to the rest of our bodies. So we aren't heavy, we are enormously cultured, educated and happy. Beginning today, when I look at my butt in the mirror I will think, "Good gosh, look how smart I am!"***
This morning, was a happy morning for me, because as soon as I came back from Bangalore early in the morning, I opened my mail box and read this story and my mood went up the sky!! My husband also was happy because, he got an excuse to tell others about his 'fat storage granary'! Now, for the next minimum one month, this story will make a round in our family and other gatherings. He is a good story teller and I am sure, will include some more anecdotes along with this story!
Now, all of us have a good/valid reason to put on weight, after reading this story!
Thanks goes to my niece, Apparna!

Haha Sandhya, enjoyed reading this. Now who wouldn't want to be a whale after reading this I wonder! ;) Being healthy should be the aim and not stick thin which at the moment seems to be the rage.
SANDHYA ..i love you..i have been depriving myself from applying a generous helping of butter on my toast since ages...cucumber as a midday snack..hatao...bring me some cakes,gulabjamuns...woooo
Today all my dear ones are in great mood..makes me happy...first SAI,RAMESH,APARNA and now you...my lucky day..
Shail: Being healthy, should be the aim - you are right, Shail. But, if we are heavy, there is a good reason why?!!!
kavita: Hey, Kavita, I am having a BIG smile on my face, now! Must visit Ramesh and Aparna's blogs, now...!
Have a feast now and give them this story why you are heavy!
I love ghee on my idlis and had stopped having it and love pooris too... Shall I have now?!!
Enjoyed reading it sandhya, thanx for sharing it.Gosh i am not fat and i am healthy. Its been two week i am deprived of food (oil, butter, tea, sugar etc....)
Now kavitha tempted me to eat gulabjamuns, will go today evening to sweet shop and get some for me to eat.
Really sandhya enjoyed reading it :) :) :) :) :)
The analogy is symbolic, and in principle, a lot of people might accept it!
Destination Infinity
Nice story, Sandhya! Yes, being healthy, in mind and body, is important. Not just being fashionably thin!:)
varunavi: As I said, as soon as I read it, I started laughing and my husband came running to ask me why I was laughing so loudly and lo, he must be eating gulab jamuns too, while coming back from office! Everyone seems to be enjoying and I am happy and going to become more intelligent!!! Enjoy gulab jamun, for today, at least, Saritha!
Destination Infinity: Yes, Destination Infinity!
Manju: You are right, Manju!
That was such a lovely read! And I guess true as well.. Especially, in today's world where being stick thin and looking malnourished is considered fashinable.. Healthy is indeed the way to be :)
And yes, I still need to exercise -to be healthy :) and because I feel the lack of exercise affecting my energy levels.. I think the most important thing for us is to try and be healthy, rather than go overboard with weight reduction programmes and obsession with body size:)
Lovely post! Made me very happy to be a whale :)
wordsndreamz: Some sort of exercise is a must, always, Smitha. As you said, with exercise, our energy level increases. We have got all sorts of gadgets nowadays and we do not use our body parts properly. They get rusted. So they need to be utilised properly to get the best out of them.
Dieting means, just avoid unnecessary extra food. We have to eat properly/correctly to stay healthy. Then, we can call ourselves an intelligent whale. Isn't it, Smitha?!!
That did make me smile and laugh!:)))
I am going to be saving this Sandhya!
thank you for sharing this!
(((((((((((((hugs)))))))))))
I needed to read this:)
no more guilt pangs over food:)
Indyeahforever: Everyone seems to be happy reading this, Indyeah! I am very happy about this.
The famous fashion models, Ramos sisters should have read this post, before they died of anorexia while trying to maintain zero size body.

Let us all enjoy good food in a moderate way and be happy always, hai na, Indyeah?
thank you thank you,sandhya...you've given me an added reason for putting off my resolution to hit the gym...LOL!!
deeps: Everyone says so!!
Lovely story... !! lol...
good one Sandhya:), now we can justify our over eating, flabbiness everything:)......But yes I dont worry much about fat except that i must be fit, which i know I am not due to the fat:)..its a vicious circle:)
whale of a postt..good one friend..and thanks for your kind msg...cheers S..
Ha..ha..ha.. Sandhya.
I like to be healthy thin. Not unhealthy fat or stick thin.
One half says fat is healthy and other half thinks being skinny is good. Both causes health trouble. It is better to know the ideal BMI and achieve that through exercise and healthy food.
hitchwriter: Yes, Dhiren! Thank you.
Renu: We have to be healthy and active, that is important. One of my friend was quite fat, but she never kept a servant maid and with two children, she was doing all the household work and was very active. She did not have a washing machine also! I met her nearly after 20 years and she looks the same! Even now she does her household work by herself! Will power?
Ramesh: Thank you, Ramesh.
Solilo: Yes, being healthy, is important, Solilo.
Yes Sandhya..its will power, its only mind which navigates the body.
My MIL cand do so much at 90 even. Basically today's generation doesnt want to do any housework, instead they can go to gym, whereas I feel working in the house is doubly beneficial, everything gets done in a good hygienic way, one saves the money also, here plus Gym fee:)
Renu; You look nice in the new photograph, Renu. Which place is that?
Yes, we need will power more than anything. It is difficult to go to the gym each and every day. If you stop for a week, we will put on weight. Working at home is best. But I too am used to a servant maid, but don't get angry when she takes leave! I start cleaning in full swing! Thank god, I am able to do it even now! Otherwise, take it easy!
