Sai Charan:God bless you and your family, Sai.

R.Ramesh: Nandri, Ramesh.

hitch writer: Thanks a lot. God bless you and your family, esp. the cute little Hriday! (don't glare at me, Dhiren! If not god, some super power! Again I am talking to my son!!
Maaaaaaaaaa, math pukaro!!!))

God bless you and your family, Renu. Thanks.

Renu: Mangalorians celebrate Ugadi on the same day as Tamils - both follow souramaana calendar.

I did aval paayasam (red poha kheer with coconut milk and gud, dahi vada. We mix neem ka phool with gud and eat first - to take the good and bad things equally in the following year) and the usual Maanga pachchadi (kachcha mango chutney), Vazhaikkaai curry (raw banana curry because it is the first day of the month and the male of the house performs tharpana for the pithru - ancestors - on that day - raw banana is important). Saambaar, rasam. We take curd with rice, at least twice a day. That's it!

I just love this tradition in south of symbolically eating gud with neem, even my daughter also told nme this.
I like here that evrybody does all the things so elaborately, no short cuts. and 6his time my H demands my maid to put all that Alapana rangoli at my door also, as she was doing in other house:)

Renu: This is the best thing about our India...every state has got its own tradition. During maargazhi maasam (Dec.15th to Jan.15th), you can see different types of rangolis in front of every house, till some years back. You can see this even now in the areas where middle class people live in small houses..even people who live in huts, put huge rngolis with colour powder. I was also doing it before marriage! We keep a single red pumpkin flower in the middle. It looks beautiful.

My grandmother used to grind tender neem leaves, make them into small balls and give us early in the morning along with a glass of butter milk, when we were children. Deworming...We make neem dry flower rasam also. You can get the flowers from Ambika appalam store.

On the festival days, only gud was used traditionally, in the olden days, even when sugar was used for other things.
