Sangeet Sarita, an AIR Programme - 'Raag Pahaadi' in film music, by Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma

I am an addict to the radio programme, 'Sangeet Sarita' in AIR (Vividh Bharati).  I have already written 2 posts on 'Sangeet Sarita' and this is going to be the third one!
This time, Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma (Hindustani Santoor vaadak) discusses about raag 'Pahaadi' and how various Hindi Film music directors handled this raag in different ways (in their own ways), in their songs.  He talks about the orchestration - which instruments were used - by these music directors for the same raag.  I cannot or not capable of writing in detail but I had jotted down the songs and will list them down here.  In 'Sangeet Saritha' programme itself, he had narrated his life history in 'Meri Sangeet Yatra' and in the current series, it is 'Paarshwa gaayan ke rangeen taane baane'.
Pt. Sharma himself is a music director and has created many gems along with Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasiya in the name of 'Shiv-Hari'.  They have directed music for some gazhals and bhajans too.
I heard these two songs today.  Both the songs are my favourites and while hearing them, I thought I will write a post about this programme.  Now, hear and enjoy the songs, like I did!
I love this film, 'Silsila' and Amitabh and Rekha are my all-time favourites!  Music is by Shiv-Hari.  He says that this raag suites well for the songs picturized in scenic places like Switzerland , Kashmir etc.  Beautiful song:

This song is very melodious but without much orchestration!  Normally, the orchestra gives flavour to the songs... this is so beautiful and peaceful to the ears that you will never notice the minimum instruments used in the background:

This beautiful song is from film 'Chandni', music is by Shiv-Hari.  The singers are Latha and Babla.  The song starts with the peaceful tune of Pt. Chaurasia's flute.  This too, is one of my favourites:

This song is from the film, 'Kashmir ki kali',  and the music is composed by O.P. Nayyaar.  The same raag 'Pahaadi' is handled in a different way:

Latha's golden voice!  Film is, ' Aakhri khat'.  Pahaadi raag again by Khayyaam:

Again, this song is composed by Khayyaam.  Rafi and Suman Kalyanpur...hmm, such a beautiful song:

This song of Latha, is composed by the most versatile music director,  Madan Mohan.  Sadhana is without 'sadhana cut'?!

Slow and melodious song, composed by Naushad, who has got hundreds of classics, to his credit. This one is sung by our inimitable Rafi saab:

'Chanda ki chaav mein, thandi thandi hawaavom mein',
The above mentioned song, by Latha, composed by Sri Ramchandra, is also based on raag 'Pahaadi'.  I couldn't get the video.
The next two songs are based on Rajasthani Folk music.  These are also based on raag  'Maand'.
Music is by Shiv-Hari, sung by Latha and the famous Rajasthani folk singer, Ila Arun. Picturized on our beautiful, talented Sridevi! The film is 'Lamhe':

He quoted the song, 'Kesariyaa...baalam',  which was composed by Hridayanath Mangeshkar, sung by Latha for the film, 'Lekin'.  I could not get the video for this song.  But came across this video in which a young girl Aishwarya, sang  this song beautifully, in a reality show, 'Chote Ustaad'.  She is going to be a star singer in the future...beautiful voice.

This programme, Sangeeth Saritha,  is being aired now (tomorrow is the 13th episode and must be the last one) and you can hear more songs on raag 'Pahaadi', from 7.30 am to 7.45 am in Vividh Bharati! After this series is over,  some other prominent person will be interviewed about some subject connected to classical music or film music...our own good music!
Friends, this is my last post for this year, 2009!  This is the 132nd post!  Your encouragement has prompted me to write so many posts, this year!  I thank you all wholeheartedly!

Now, let us all welcome the New Year, 2010!  All of us in our family wish you a
Happy, Prosperous and Peaceful New Year!
God Bless you!  Be Happy Always!

Edited: Corrected the title - Raag Pahadi in film music - 11th Jan.'10

I never knew Sangeet Sarita still comes on these days. It was something one tuned in every morning, many years ago. Of late it was the WorldSpace that was put on for uninterrupted classical music in the morning. Now with WS being closed down, I am glad you brought this to my notice.

HAPPY NEW YEAR HUGS!!!!!!!!!!

((((((((((((hugs))))))))))))))

I haven't been blogging much, but it will be BLASPHEMY if i don't wish you for new year!!!

and what a treat was in store here!! so many wonderful songs, most of them my favourites!

I do not have knowledge of ragaas either... my first boss was trained in classical music and used to play "Ghatagam" in concerts... and i have this unquenchable thirst for music.... so he used to talk to me a lot about it. he had told me of certain ragaas... and given examples of old hindi songs based on them!

i have a friend called "Shivaranjani" and my boss told me even that is a name of a Raaga! :D

ur post delighted me so much!!!

hugssssssss!!! :D

Crafty: Hey, am I happy to see your precious comment here, in my blog! Nice to see you here, crafty!

Good to know that you are interested in classical raaga based songs. Unknowingly, we start appreciating these songs and never forget them even after many years! Foot tapping songs are good to hear (I have got many favourites too!) but don't stay for long. I can recognize around THREE raagas!! That too after hearing about them in Sangeeth saritha where they explain about them like Pt.Sharma!

Yes, Shivaranjani is the name of a beautiful raaga...a tamil song starts from that word and I was told that it is based on that raaga...see how I gather my knowledge!

Our best wishes for a very very Happy and Peaceful New Year to you and your family and my whole hearted love to you, girl!!! God bless you! Be Happy always!

Swaram: Pt.Sharma explains beautifully how the musical instruments were used to give expression to the song, for a happy song or a sad song. Some more songs are coming...

Aishwarya's voice is one of the best of the current new voices.

Ramesh: I will mail you the details, Ramesh.

Asha: Yes, listening to old songs at night in the dark gives such a nice feeling.

Thank you and our wishes to you for a very very happy new year, Asha!

Kanagu: Hear them 3-4 times and you will get familiar with them and then will enjoy them, Kanagu. Yellaa paatum nallaayirukkum.

The last song - Kesariya sung by that young girl Aishwarya was brilliant! It's a long time since I have seen such high pitched variation in tone and the song still being fluent! That girl has got a lot of talent and great voice - rightly admired by the best - Shreya Ghoshal!

Indyeah: I am very happy to know that you and your mother enjoyed the songs.

I heard 'jaanewaalo zara', it is my favourite too. I had seen the movie when I was a school girl and cried so much that I could not walk on the road with my puffed eyes.

I have got some more songs from this programme by Pt.Sharma. Sometimes if I am busy, I miss to listen to what he says. I have got three Rafi's songs and don't know on which raagaas they are based on. I jotted down Bhairavi raaga based songs. I had second thoughts about doing one more post on this title, now, I will do it. I think I will have help from your mother for those songs! Thank you Indyeah and your mother for the Dosti song!

The credit for the songs goes to Pt.Sharma, I should say!

Aparna said...

I am pretty late in wishing you a Happy New Year but I hope you have a beautiful year ahead.
All the songs that you have mentioned are priceless. I am a die hard fan of Shiv Hari's music. It is unfortunate that they do not compose for films any more.
I loved all the songs of Lamhe.
Many many years ago, when I was a teen, I used to learn Hindustani classical music. Any claasical raga based song still gives me joy. There is nothing like the beauty of Indian classical music.

Maitreyee said...

Wow Sandyaji, Your blog rocks... I am not sure if you are Maradhi Manni but surely you are Sangeet Manni (pardon my Tamil). I too love all the songs you linked and I enjoyed watching them again... Thanks...

Sandhya said...

Aparna: Have you noticed, Aparna, most of their songs are of Pahadi raag. Pt.Sharma's Jammu nativity influences his music, I think!

Did you learn music? Nice. You will always recognise good music, Aparna.

We always make it a point to attend at least 2-3 concerts of Hindustani and Carnatic music, every December music season, here in Chennai. We missed this year, though.

Maithreyee: Thank you, Maithreyee!

Thanks for the link to this post! :)

Sandhya said...

Shail: I have written a lot about this programme, Sangeeth Saritha in many of my posts. Now, a carnatic singer and hindustani singers are taking one raga and sing in that raaga and discuss about it. They play one film song also in that raaga. Very interesting!

7.30 AM to 7.45 AM, Vividh Bharathi!
