These are the few of my favourite movies!

Destination Infinity asked me to do the tag 'My top three movies of all time'. I had been writing this post for a few days now, keeping on changing the movies. Even now, I am not 100% happy about the list...tonight more movie names will flash in my dream!

English: I keep forgetting the names of the movies all the time, as you all know by now, my name is 'maradhi manni'! So, I decided to ask my son 'which movies do I talk about a lot?' and he gave a list and I picked up just 3, from the list!

1. Gods Must be Crazy-II:

We repeatedly watch this movie, when some get together is at home or if we are depressed and not in mood, this movie lifts up our mood! Every frame was shot with so much thoughtfulness, in this movie. The story happens in the Kalahari desert in South Africa. The super hero in the movie is Nixau
, who was (he is no more now), from the Kalahari desert itself. His South African language is funny to the ears with lots of clucking sounds. The story starts with his two small children chasing the elephant poachers' truck and lose their way. Nixau starts looking for them and encounters many weird people...the movie is hilarious!

I love the different types of background music which is given for each and every character. Have a taste of it here and please watch this movie if you haven't watched it yet!

2. Rain Man:

Both Hoffman and Tom Cruise are my favourite actors. I don't get bored of watching this movie again and again. Dustin Hoffman has lived the character of a person affected by autism. Tom Cruise is his brother and wonders why his father bequeathed a huge amount in the will in Hoffman's name, whose whereabouts, he did not know, until then. So he looks for his long lost brother and the drama begins. We can understand why the two characters are behaving the way they are, in this story. Truly believable story.

I was wondering if I should name 'Philadelphia' as my favourite too, then thought this one is better.

3. Catch Me If You Can:

This movie is based on a true story. DiCaprio acts as Frank Abagnale Jr., a conman who changes his name and character, at the drop of a hat and the main job of his is, cheque forgery. He became so skillful that the FBI eventually turned to him for help in catching other cheque forgers. Steven Spielberg has directed the film. Tom Hanks acts as the FBI agent and he is a natural actor and my favourite too. You can notice DiCaprio changing from a small innocent boy to an adult with a cunning face, later. A very interesting movie.

Hindi:

1. Ek Ruka hua Faisla: I looked out in imdb for this movie and it says, it is a TV movie, directed by Basu Chatterjee. This is a remake of '12 Angry Men' but the Hindi version is equally good, without any female character or jhatka matka songs. Very interesting till the end. KK Raina, Pankaj Kapur and Annoo Kapoor have acted very well.

Smita Patil and Amol Palekar's movie. Anant Nag, Naseeruddin Shah and Amrish Puri also have acted in the great Shyam Benegal's movie. I can never forget Amol Palekar's eyes, the way he looks at Smita...couldn't sleep at night on the day I watched this movie for the first time. The story of the film is based on a Marathi actress and you can see how Smita transforms from a young happy, innocent girl to a matured, wise, adult woman. A serious movie, though.

Dharmendra, Sharmila Tagore, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan have acted in the Hrishikesh Mukherjee's comedy movie! I was a great fan of Dhrmendra when I was a teenager. When I think back, I like this movie and a couple of other movies of him, that is all. I wonder how I was crazy enough to collect his photos from the 'picture post' magazine and save them (I have got them even now...feel funny looking at them now!) All the four of them acted very well in this movie, even Sharmila Tagore! The songs are good too! And the famous Om Prakash is also there in the main role!

We watch it again and again, whenever it is screened in our TV!

I was shuffling movies in my mind, whether to name 'Dil Chahta hai' or 'Lagaan' (some friends have already mentioned this movie as their favourite and this movie is in the top place in my heart, but I wanted to mention some other movie) and came to 'Sarfarosh'!

Aamir Khan and Nasiruddin Shah acted equally well. The film is based on Pakistani terrorists infiltrating into our country with arms via Rajasthan. Nasiruddin Shah acts as a famous ghazal singer from Pakistan. Aamir's family members are killed by the terrorists and he quits his medical college and concentrates in finding the terrorists by joining the Police force.

The story develops like a thriller. This movie was released during the Kargil war and became talk of the town. As usual, Aamir and Nasiruddin Shah competed with each other in acting. This movie will have an important place in my heart.

Tamil:

Sridevi, Kamal Haasan and Silk Smitha (Silk Smitha acted very well in this movie, she is very beautiful too!) combination in Balu Mahendra's direction. Superb movie. I somehow like Sridevi in Tamil movies than Hindi movies. Her voice also is natural while speaking in Tamil. Kamal is Kamal always, the superb actor. Sridevi's innocence is natural. We get so involved in the movie that we switch it off during the last train scene because we can never avoid the tears in our eyes. The movie is full of melodious songs.

I was wondering whether to mention 'Vedham puthithu' or 'Devar Magan' or 'Mudhalvan' or 'Muthal mariyaathai' or this one. But Shivaji in 'Mudhal Mariyaadai' should be here, I felt. In Bharathiraja's direction, Shivaji did a mature controlled role and Radha's full potential came out in this movie. But, a big BUT, 'Anbe Sivam' cannot be left out!

In 'Anbe Sivam' (Love is God), Kamal is a communist and Madhavan is a capitalist and both are just opposite in nature. Kamal has a distorted face with a twitch and many other complications after he met with an accident. Madhavan is a chocolate boy, pampered by his parents and who has never faced with any problems until he was stranded this time at the airport because of the heavy rains, in Bhubaneshwar. Then, they show how the two of them clash with each other (many funny occasions are also there!) because of their opposite nature. Madhavan's attitude slowly changes in course of the movie. Sunder, C. has directed the movie but everyone knows that Kamal is the one who has done that. A very good movie to watch.

3. Ramanaa:

I am not very fond of Vijayakanth...don't like his red-tinged eyes and his dialogue delivery at all. But in this movie, he acted very well as an anti-corruption police official and blended into the character. The storyline is superb and we can relate to all the incidents with our lives...esp. the dead body 'being' treated at the hospital with a bill for a hefty sum.

This movie is directed by the now 'Ghajini' famous, A.R. Murugadoss. He has done a very good job. The incidents shown in the movie are so well directed that we feel that they are true incidents. They can happen to us too.

One more movie of my favourite Kamal Haasan! I had to list this movie in my favourites! Kamal acts as a mentally affected person and is in a mental hospital. His room mate tells him that an angel named Abirami will marry him after he gets out of the hospital. So Kamal starts looking out for her and 'finds' her and gets obsessed with her. He is very intelligent otherwise but is surrounded by people who try to use him for their advantage.

This is a beautiful movie which shows the love between him and his Abirami, like a poem. Take a look at this song and you can see for yourself!

Sorry, D.I., I didn't stick to the 3 movie tag! I added one extra movie in Tamil and Hindi! I like most of Manirathnam's movies. I didn't list them here because you have already done so!

Whoever reads this post and feels like doing this tag, please do. If you inform me, I will be very very happy to read and know about your favourite movies and if I had missed a good movie in your list, I can watch it!

TGMBC II - I haven't seen this one yet Sandhya! But have rave reviews of it. Must get hands on DVD!
By the way, if you like these stress buster movies, have you seen "The Party" - Peter Sellers. Please do if you haven't!!! :D :D It's my all time lift-me-up movie!

Not seen Rainman either, wish to read the book first!

Catch me if you can... was fantabulous. Though I've always had my loyalties with Tom Hanks, there's something about Caprio in this movie!!! And yes, your observation on how he changes from an innocent boy (when he fakes as being the french class teacher!! :D ) to much later when he fakes being a lawyer... really applaudable.

Chupke Chupke!!! You have GOT to love Dharamji in it!!!!! he was classic! All that pure hindi, and Sharmila's acting... and Amitabh telling Jaya, "yeh jo phool hai, woh phool nahi hai....phool nahi hai yeh..." Hahahahah!!!! :D
I love this choice!

I wish to see Moondram Pirai once Sandhya, though I cannot follow Tamil. I have seen this in Hindi only, but I am sure the original Tamil one has a charm. I know that song "Kanne kalaimane" by heart, even though I cannot speak Tamil... just because I love it! :D
Illayaraja sir rocked the music direction....

That last song from Guna I have heard recently when someone shared it with me. It's nice. Now that I know the gist of the movie... it's touching!

Loved Chupke Chupke best of all! :D :D :D

Okay, is my comment longer than your post??? That means - I'm back!! :D

(((((((((((hugs))))))))) Sandhya!

It is a very selective list.I for one am not much of English movie watcher on DVD.
Yes, my Hindia movie list is fairly long.

Roshmi Sinha said...

Nice reviews :)

... However my list will be longer :D

TGMBC II is hilarious. But do watch TGMBC I. Thats even better. And Nixau was a real 'Bushman'.

'Chupke Chupke' is one of my favs too. Btw... it was a remake of the Bengali movie 'Chaddabeshi' starring the legendary Uttam Kumar.

Aparna said...

I love all the Hindi and English movies you listed here. In the Tamil section, I saw Moondram Pirai's Hindi version Sadma and loved it.
Kamal is a fantastic actor. I wish most of the movies made down south would release with a Hindi subtitle. Dubbed versions are not as good.

sm: Thank you, sm!

Shoba: Thank you!

Crafty: Yes, I have seen TGMBC I too, but somehow I liked the second part more! I will watch 'The Party'!

Rainman, movie is very good. You will never get bored at any time while watching this movie.

I have started liking DiCaprio too now!

We use Dharamji English often at home! I remember Amitabh's dialogue too!

You know the story of Moondram Pirai, so you can easily follow it in Tamil. It is very good in Tamil.

Haha, you are with me, loving 'chupke chupke'!

I am happy to see you back, Crafty! ((HUGGSSS))!

BK Chowla: I took many days to make this list and still I am not very happy!

You can list top 10 movies from your loooong list, Chowlaji, it must be interesting for us to know!

Roshmi Sinha: I have watched Part I of Gods must be crazy. I liked that too!

Everybody seems to like 'Chupke Chupke'! I read that this is a remake of a Bengali movie in wikepedia!

Great list, Sandhya!

I loved 'Rainman', such a complex topic handled superbly.

'Catch me if you can'- This I enjoyed immensely.

I haven't watched the Tamil films, but the Hindi ones you've listed are favourites of mine too. :)

Deepa said...

I liked Gods must be crazy too. Among the Hindi lot - Chupke chupke is one of my favourites - because Amitabh in a comedy role is superb. Among your tamil selection - I can see that you are a Kamal fan. And yes, even I'm not fond of the Captain. I would have put Micheal Madana Kamarajan in my list. Just love it!

Nice list.. I like Gods must be crazy n catch me if you can too!!!
And Chupke Chupke is a classic.. can watch it any number of times and Dharamji rocks in that movie.. I love his Shudh Hindi :) Sarfarosh is another movie which will be in my most fav movies list for sure..
Moodam Pirai.. have watched the hindi version (Sadma).. great movie!

Destination Infinity said...

I guess, I have not many of these movies! I watched TGMBC a long time back, and have forgotten it! Strangely I have watched Catch Me if you can but don't remember the story! Time to see them all again :) I have not seen Munram Pirai fully, I thought it was a sad movie! I want to see all those Amithab Bacchan and Dharmendra and Rakesh Khanna movies... Have not seen many other than Sholay and a few more... Thanks for doing the tag, yeah you have given us a lot of movies to watch!! :)

Aparna: Dubbed version is horrible to watch. The lip sink will not be there and we get distracted because of that.

Sadma's Tamil original is better. Kamal and Sridevi were a hit pair in those days.

Manju: Thank you, Manju!

Deepa: Yes, my whole family is crazy about Kamal movies, not the ordinary ones, but the special ones!

The story of 'Ramanaa' is superb. That is the reason, I listed it in my favourite movies.

Bikram: I thought of mentioning about that scene, then this post will become even longer! Both the kids are cute!

From the 'Titanic' chocolate hero to serious villainic roles...Caprio is turning into a great actor.

Thank you, Bikram!

Evanescentthoughts: Everyone seems to like 'Chupke Chupke' and Dharam's 'Shudh' Hindi. He was great in that movie. I liked Sharmila too, in this movie. Normally, she 'acts' and doesn't blend into the role, here, she acted well.

Destination Infinity: Watch both First and second parts of TGMBC. Both are good.

Moondram Pirai's climax is sad, but you can switch off, if you don't like...but Kamal's acting brings tears in our eyes. Watch it for Kamal and Sridevi...their best movie together.

Amitabh, Dharmendra, Rajesh Khanna and Shashi Kapoor too. His 'Kalyug', 'Junoon' and some more movies are classics.

Though it was tough, I was happy doing this tag, Destination Infinity, thank you!

What a wonderful list, Sandhya!

I haven't watched Gods Must be Crazy - and have it on my must-watch list. After reading your review - I will definitely watch it.

Loved the other movies you mentioned. I haven't watched Bhumika, and the Tamil movies- but loved the others mentioned! Wonderful, wonderful list!

Renu said...

good list.I also liked Catch me if you can and Tom cruise is my favourite too.
We are quite similar in likes as I also like Amol Palekar:)

Swaram said...

Gr8 choice Sandhya. I have not watched Bhumika and the first one in Hindi.
Chupke Chupke is one movie I never miss when it comes on TV too.
Corolla-Karela he he and that purest form of Hindi which Jeejaji is treated with :)
Sarfarosh is one movie which changed anybody's views about Aamir being able to do only the romantic hero kind of roles :) I luvvv it :)

Tamil: I think I have watched only the first one and like it :)

radha said...

Good choices. I have not seen all of them. Chupke Chupke is an all time favourite. We keep watching parts when they show the reruns on TV. And then Fiddler on the Roof is a great favourite of mine along with Sound of Music. I love these musicals. My F-I-L watched Thillana Mohanambal so many times, that though it was a language that was new to me ( in my early married days) that I got over the bad print of the CD and watched it. Can't say it was my favourite, but then some things get under your skin!

Sandhya said...

wordsndreamz: Poohi alongwith you and your husband will love this movie TGMBC both I and II. You can repeat watching this movie, Smitha!

Bhumika is a serious movie. Haven't you watched 'Chupke Chupke' - a must watch movie. Thank you!

Renu: I like all movies of Amol Palekar, directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee!

Swaram: One more fan of Chupke Chupke, here!

Sarfarosh stayed in my mind for many days...strong storyline and Aamir's acting combination was superb!

Radha: Everybody seems to watch 'Chupke chupke' repeatedly! I feel happy to have listed it here, Radha!

I love Sound of music too. I can watch it anytime.

We watch Thillana Mohanambal often, for both Shivaji and Padmini! All of us love that movie.

Sandhya how i missed this post i dont know but i am late here.

I love guna song,i have downloaded that song in my mobile and i keep on playing the song.I just love that song......

Chupka chupka is superb movie,i have seen that many times and every time i laugh a lot....

Chandrika Shubham said...

I have seen only chupe chupe out of these. I will watch these movies.

First choice of tamil movie if it is sadma then it is also my favorite.

kanagu said...

I didn't seen all the 3 movies you have mentioned in English movie section..

For the first time I am hearing about 'God must be crazy'.. other 2 were in my PC and I will watch it soon :) :)

I have watched none of the hindi movies.. but Sarfrosh seems to be intersting and I will try to get the DVD for that..

In Tamil movies... Moondram Pirai is a classic.. that climax is something... Kamal's acting is just chanceless.. my heart always go for Cheenu..

Anbe Sivam is another movie I like very much and Ramana is just wonderful.. with no love track and no usual cinema stuff that movie runs for 3 hrs in a gripping manner.. thats the best of Murgadoss according to me..

Guna.. I am yet to watch it completely.. Most of the time it will be bits and pieces... :( and I know how much you love it.. :) that you are worried about Guna casette than the car :D :D

Sandhya said...

Varunavi: You love Guna song?! Lovely!

Every frame in Chupke Chupke is funny and everyone acted very well. It can also be called a comedy classic!

Chandrika Shubham: Everybody seems to have seen Chupke chupke and liked it!

Yes, it is Sadma!

Kangagu: Watch I and II of Gods Must be Crazy. You ask your family also to watch it with you...it is too funny. Language doesn't seem to be a problem for this movie, Kanagu.

Sarfarosh is a serious movie. You get the DVD with sub-titles. One of Aamir's best movies.

Anbe Sivam and Ramanaa are good movies. I can put these movies together because I think Ramanaa is Vijayakanth's best movie, because of the strong storyline and best direction of Murugadoss - it is unbelievable that this is his debut direction!

Please watch Guna, Kanagu, you will never forget this movie after wards. Oh, you remember how crazy I am about this movie and the song? Thank you, Kanagu!

Destination Infinity said...

If you can give a list of good movies (hits) of all those actors - Rajesh Khanna, Dharmendra, AB, Shashi Kapoor, then it would be very useful. I started following the hindi movies only after '92-93 - So, I have no ideas or even names of movies that came prior to that. Thanks.

Thats his second movie... Dheena is his first.. :)

I am kind of surprised you clubbed 'Sarfrosh' with 'Bhumika' and 'Chupke Chupke'

IMO, Sarfrosh was yet another formula movie....no way close to Bhumika or CC.

Sandhya said...

Destination Infinity: Let me mail the list as early as possible, Destination Infinity!

Ramesh: I had been asking you to make a list for a long time and you haven't done it! Please do it as early as possible!

kanagu: Yes, I remembered now! Ajith's movie, right? It was a good movie, I heard. Thanks for reminding!

A: I liked Sarfarosh (forget Sonali Bendre, she was used as a doll!). Mirch Masala and Mr.& Mrs. Iyer also was in the list but after elimination, I produced this list!

Thank you, A!

Your selection of movies is really confounding. Guna and Rain Man has intense performance by lead acharacters, while rest of Movies are Popcorn Movies.

Many people think Anbe Sivam is a hard hitting movie, but it isn't. Mahanadi is the real hard hitting movie in past 20 years of Tamil Cinema or so.

I am not rude to you, but people like you should really try to promote intense, good and unnoticed movies made in Indian Cinema.

Sandhya said...

VEDAGIRIS: Welcome to my blog, Mr.Vedariris!

I like all types of movies and it should be shown when we make a list. I like many serious movies, including Mahaanadhi. I don't like Vijayakanth, but liked Ramanaa. Chupke Chupke is a comedy movie and a very good movie. Gods must be crazy...every frame is good in that movie. I can go on explaining.

This is a tag. You can also make it/make a list like I did. It must be interesting! Please link my name and tell me. I can mention you in twitter too.

Thanks for the comment.
