If There Is A Will There Is A Way!

.

I had been to a relative's house yesterday.  While entering their flat, I saw this man. I didn't notice anything abnormal at first sight.  Then I noticed...the man/tailor was sitting on a tricycle with a sewing machine and stitching clothes!

My relative said that this tailor visits their street every Thursday. He repairs dresses for minimum Rs.10 according to the work.  Next day to the next street.  He honks a horn as soon as he comes in and honks again before leaving.  The honk looks like a bus honk! It is easy for him to take the machine by his tricycle! I asked him how much he earns a month on an average...around 6 to 7 thousand according to the work he gets, it seems! He looked like a happy person... he posed happily for the photo...'yevlo photo venaa yeduththukko!' he said...You can take as many photos as you like!

If you have got the will you have got the way!

Cool. We are visiting Chennai in February. Does he stitch pattu ravikkai (silk blouse)?. Will you recommend him? In fact, we (not me, my wife) is looking for a good women's tailor. Thanks.

KAVITA SAHARIA: Yes, I liked most is he seems to be a very happy person. He laughed loudly when I took the photograph!

IRFANUDDIN: Yes, you are right, Irfan!

SG: He just repairs dresses, that is all. Sometimes he stitches curtains. But his business is good, he said laughingly!

My tailor is in Adyar. She takes minimum 2 weeks' time to stitch blouses!

RENU: This man also just repairs. I have seen roadside tailors but mobile tailor is new! I have seen some people rolling the sewing machine on the road for short distances and it had small wheels.

MANJU JOGLEKAR: Yes, beggars who beg with all the body parts in tact, should learn a lesson from this man. Thank you, Manju!

Cool. I wish we had someone like that around our apartment. I've got stuff for altering, and since I don't get around much, with work & stuff, it's pretty much ageing in my wardrobe!

With the ready-made garments industry flourishing, I guess tailors get lesser jobs these days, compared to earlier. But the garment factories may employ tailors, I guess.

Mobile tailor service is a good idea. If they visit a place consistently, they become quite popular, as well!

Thanks for sharing this, Sandhya. Such profiles reaffirms one's faith in the old adage, isn't it?

I remember one such person in Jabalpur. He was a disabled person and used his tricycle to collect garments for repair from houses. He would take them home where he and his wife worked on them (he repaired and she stitched new ones too) and bring them back the next day or a few days later. He was well known in our locality and we would call him on his mobile if there was something urgent.

Self employment need not only be running kiosks and shops, right? There is a market for every kind of service.

K.PARTHASARATHY: Yes, we need these people, Partha Sir! Thank you!

DESTINATION INFINITY: Yes, they are used in garment indstries - export garments. One day a week to a street is a good idea. He goes on the same days. People can collect and keep them for stitching.

CYBER NAG: With huge population like ours, we need all sorts of people for doing odd jobs. Otherwise our clothes will be lying down waiting for alteratiion, stitching small small areas in the good dresses. We can't throw them out if the material is still good, isn't it?

Jabalpur man is great. He will be respected by everyone.

Thank you, Zephyr

DESTINATION INFINITY: Thank you, D.I. I will honour it in a couple of days!

JEEVAN: Even I have seen mobile tailors who push the machine on small wheels, but this one is unique. He is sitting on top of the tricycle and stitching! What an idea!

Mobile tailoring! Seems like a good idea. This should be promoted - will save some of us the painful experience of going to Ranganathan St. (not me :P)

Very innovative!

ANUTATIONS: Welcome to my blog, Bhargavi!

We find mobile tailors in Chennai, but this person is going from street to street with a sewing machine on a tricycle!

Yes, we need somebody to do the repair work. If we give the repair work to our regular tailors, first they refuse to do that otherwise they just put them in a corner for months together!

I liked your blog, Bhargavi!
